Kansas City, Missouri is the home of the NFL’s Chiefs. Originally an AFL team based in Houston, the Chiefs made the move to Kansas City in 1963. Before long they would make another move, joining the NFL in 1970 as a member of the AFC West.
Success on the field made them a major player in the 1960s. Owner & Founder Lamar Hunt and head coach Hank Stram were consistently putting together a winning formula that kept them at the top of the standings. This clout carried over in the early days after the NFL merger and the Chiefs found themselves squaring off with the Green Bay Packers in the first Super Bowl. Despite losing 35-10, the Chiefs continued to be seen as a powerhouse franchise. They would capture their first and only NFL title in the 1969 Super Bowl, winning 23-7 over the Minnesota Vikings. Star quarterback Len Dawson was selected as the Super Bowl MVP.
A period of regression followed, with the Chiefs only making one appearance in the playoffs between 1969 and 1986. Stram left the team in 1974 and a string of coaches to follow could not match his success. In fact, it was not until Marty Shottenheimer was hired in 1989 that things began to turn around. A new group of players began to solidify their spots as starters and led to the Chiefs being perennial contenders again.
Acquiring Joe Montana in 1993 had fans buzzing at Arrowhead Stadium. Along with Marcus Allen, Christian Okoye, and Derrick Thomas, the Chiefs looked poised to make a big impact in the playoffs. An 11-5 record in the regular season carried Kansas City to an AFC Championship Game. Matching up against Buffalo, the Chiefs failed to advance to the Super Bowl. They would not win another playoff game until 2016.
Players have come and gone, but the mission for the Chiefs remains the same: winning another Super Bowl. Continuing his work towards this goal is the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013, Andy Reid. Reid brought a pedigree of success and experience from his time in Green Bay and Philadelphia that management hoped would put them over the top. He did tremendous work proving himself in Kansas City, bringing the team to the playoffs in seven of his first eight seasons in KC. Reid built upon his success each year and topped it off with a Super Bowl win in 2020. He intends to add to his collection.
Exploding onto the scene in his first year as a starter, quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been smashing records and leading his team to tremendous wins. Coming out of Texas Tech, Mahomes spent his first NFL season learning from the sidelines and was more than ready to become the face of the franchise. In his first season as the starter in KC, Mahomes earned himself the title of AP Offensive Player of the Year. Surrounded by talent in Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and rookie wide receiver Mecole Hardman, Mahomes expertly distributes the ball, echoing the sentiments of the iconic Hank Stram cheering them on to “keep matriculating the ball down the field, boys!”
The rushing game entered a new phase with Clyde Edwards-Helaire, the 32nd pick in the 2020 NFL Draft leading the charge. He proved himself not only to be worthy of starting, but as an elite running back that can put them team on his shoulders when needed. The Chiefs would strengthen the depth chart at this position with Darrell Williams and Darwin Thompson ready to step in at a moment’s notice. Le’Veon Bell signed on to make this an absolutely stellar backfield.
Defensively, Kansas City has become a force to be reckoned with. Defensive Tackle Chris Jones is a sack machine. Anchoring the backfield is Tyron Mathieu, the honey badger. Taco Charlton joined the group to bring more pressure up front and to provide solid veteran leadership.
A first place finish in the AFC West punched KC’s ticket to the postseason in 2019. The Wild Card bye meant that the Chiefs could rest before matching up against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round. A rough start saw Houston jump out in front to a 24-0 lead. However, the offensive fire power on this Chiefs team has the propensity to keep them in every game. Mahomes and company staged a comeback for the ages with a 28 point second quarter on their way to an historic win as Kansas City emerge victorious in the end by a score of 51-31. The Chiefs headed back to the AFC Championship against the Tennessee Titans. Overcoming another early deficit, Mahomes and the Chiefs pulled ahead and never looked back. A final score of 35-24 sends Kansas City to the Super Bowl for the first time in 50 years.
Squaring off against the San Francisco 49ers, this was a game for the ages. The high-powered Kansas City offense ran into a punishing 49ers defense that held them in check throughout most of the game. Down 20-10 in the fourth quarter, Mahomes and company turned it on to complete another double digit comeback resulting in a double digit win. The thrilling final few minutes saw three Chiefs touchdowns before the confetti fell over them as Super Bowl champions. Coach Andy Reid finally captured his first Lomardi Trophy as a head coach. After 50 years, the Kansas City Chiefs are Super Bowl champions again!
The 2020 team picked up right where the left off. Going 14-2 in the regular season, Mahomes and company earned the top spot in the AFC. After their bye for the Wild Card, the eliminated the Cleveland Browns in the divisional round by a score of 22-17. Mahomes suffered a concussion late in the game and his status would be uncertain heading into the AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills. However, Mahomes was able to complete the protocol and get back out on the field. Leading his team, the Chiefs were firing on all cylinders on their way to a 38-24 victory and a second consecutive trip to the Super Bowl. Facing off against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City would have to play at their highest level.
However, the game just didn’t go their way. Defensively, KC looked strong early on but lost their composure once Tampa was able to get on the board. The ensuing penalties only made things worse and the game started to get away from them. Offensively, the Chiefs couldn’t get anything going. The pressure on Mahomes gave him no time and space. He was unable to generate anything through the air or with his legs. The Buccaneers simply outplayed the Chiefs in a 31-9 Tampa victory.
This loss will sting for a long time to come. Patrick Mahomes and his team will surely use this pain to fuel them in 2021 and beyond to be even better. Expect this team to come back with a vengeance next season!
Many great players have come out of the tunnel for the Chiefs throughout the years.
