Tampa Bay Buccaneers football is nearing a half century in the NFL. In that time, the franchise built itself up from a laughable squad at its inception all the way to Super Bowl champions. Fans of the Bucs have endured both the best and worst parts of rooting for the home team. Ever hard-working, the team will compete down in Florida again for another chance to hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
To say that things got off to a rocky start for this franchise in 1976 would be an understatement. Indeed, the Buccaneers did not win a game until week 13 of their second season, making for 26 straight losses to begin their history. However, after finally crossing this hurdle, their play gradually got better and by 1979 the Bucs won their division and found themselves hosting the NFC Championship. Shut out by the Rams 9-0, the Bucs fell back into mediocrity (and then lower) and would only make the playoffs twice more before 1997. They would set an NFL record with 12 consecutive seasons with 10 or more losses.
Despite having talented names come through Tampa over the years including Lee Roy Selmon, Doug Williams, Jimmie Giles, Ricky Bell, and Steve Young, the Buccaneers could never put together a winning product. The next playoff appearance by the Bucs would be in 1997 under head coach Tony Dungy. He would bring the Bucs to the playoffs four times in his six seasons there. However, it was not until the 2002 season that Jon Gruden took over and brought the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the Promised Land with a Super Bowl victory. Winning 48-21 over the Oakland Raiders, the Buccaneers had finally ascended to the top of the NFL.
The past few seasons had the feel of earlier Buccaneers teams. Failing to eclipse 10 wins since 2010, the Bucs had gone through coaches and quarterbacks quite quickly in recent years. However, handing the reigns over to Bruce Arians felt different. Respected and beloved by his players, Arians knows how to motivate a team. And, when management was able to secure future hall of famer Tom Brady to come play quarterback for them, they didn’t need a lot more to get them going.
Bringing in one of the best quarterbacks of all-time, the Buccaneers offense was instantly transformed. A proven Super Bowl winner, Brady takes the talent around him on offense and gets the very best out of them. Every team around the league knew that Tampa was now a contender.
Along with running backs Ronald Jones II and Leonard Fournette, and receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, the Bucs offense has the capability of keeping the opposing defense up at night worrying about Sunday. Making things even sweeter, the Bucs were able to lure Rob Gronkowski out of retirement to rejoin Brady on the field. This man is a legend on and off the gird iron. Incredibly, the Bucs added Antonio Brown to the roster midseason. The talent and depth of this offense is unreal.
The Bucs used their 13th overall pick in 2020 to bring in offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs from Iowa. He is tasked with helping keep Brady safe.
Defensively, the Buccaneers have a host of talent up front with Ndamukong Suh, William Gholston, and Vita Vea. Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul are as tough as they come at linebacker. The backfield consisting of Carlton Davis, Antoine Winfield Jr., and Jordan Whitehead has gotten a boost from the new defensive scheme. With the final pick of the first round in the 2021 NFL Draft, Tampa Bay selected Joe Tryon, an outside linebacker out of Washington. This young stud will need to work extra hard if he intends to start on this punishing squad. He is hoping his rookie season ends with a Super Bowl ring.
It would take a few weeks to find their footing, but once they did this team tore up the NFC. Going 11-5 in the regular season, the Buccaneers eliminated a tough Washington team in the Wild Card round by a score of 31-23. Setting their sights on New Orleans, Tampa took down Drew Brees and the Saints 30-20. They would face Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship game. Fueled by great offense and excellent defense, the Bucs emerged on top by a score of 31-26. Heading to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2002, they would face off against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champs.
The Super Bowl was held at Raymond James Stadium, making the Buccaneers the first team in league history to play a Super Bowl game at home. It was a tight game early with both defenses asserting their dominance and not letting either offense get anything going. However, Brady and company kept with their game plan and eventually carved out a path which generated points. Once Tampa started scoring, the Kansas City defense lost their composure, resulting in penalties which favored the Bucs. Brady took advantage on his way to a 31-9 victory. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers became Super Bowl champs for the second time in franchise history and Tom Brady earned his seventh Lombardi Trophy.
This group is looking to repeat in 2021 and certainly has the coaching staff and roster to get it done!
The best Tampa Bay Buccaneers players to have ever graced the gridiron include Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, Ronde Barber, John Lynch, Mike Alstott, Lee Roy Selmon, Simeon Rice, and Warrick Dunn. Click here to learn more about the history of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise.
