Throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, the San Francisco 49ers were football royalty. Led by Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Steve Young, this team was loaded with talent and put it to use each week to bring home victory after decisive victory.
Most recently, under head coach Kyle Shanahan, San Francisco has blossomed into an elite playoff team again. In just his third year, Shanahan’s 49ers reached the Super Bowl, where they would lose to the Kansas City Chiefs. The 2021 season saw the team make it all the way back to the NFC Championship, before being eliminated by the division rival and eventual Super Bowl Champion LA Rams.
The 2022 season will have a different feel to it. The 49ers are moving on from starting QB Jimmy Garoppolo and placing the ball in the hands of Trey Lance. The number three overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance sat behind Garoppolo and learned from the veteran. Now, the organization believes that young signal caller is ready to move up to the top of the depth chart.
The supporting cast around Lance is great, including a formidable offensive line. Second year running back Elijah Mitchell is looking to eclipse 1,000 yards, after coming up just 37 shy in 2021 (despite playing in only 11 games). Deebo Samuel is a playmaker than can change the course of a game with his abilities. He will make a great target for Lance, as will George Kittle. The solid tight end is as dependable as they come.
On the defensive side of the ball Fred Warner and Azeez Al-Shaair tackle anything that moves. Nick Bosa has his sights set on the quarterback at all times and is an expert at dragging them down behind the line for a sack. The backfield tandem of Jimmie Ward and Emmanuel Moseley make throwing anything downfield a risky call for the opposition.
Could this be the year that San Francisco goes all the way? Anything is possible and with the talent up and down this roster, there is a good shot that the 49ers can make a strong playoff run. Despite the inexperience at quarterback with Trey Lance, teams around the league know better than to take this group for granted as they strive to etch their names in the history books alongside 49ers legends.
There is a history of success in the Bay Area from which to draw inspiration. San Francisco has won five Super Bowls in their history. Three were under the Hall of Fame Coach Bill Walsh, and two more under his successor, George Seifert.
Notable players to have laced up in the iconic red, white, and gold uniforms include some of the best the NFL has ever had to offer in Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young, Ronnie Lott, and Roger Craig. For more about the San Francisco 49ers and their history, click here.
