Minute Maid Park
Minute Maid Park, in downtown Houston, TX, is the location of the home stadium for the Houston Astros. Since the gates opened to the public for the first regular season game on April 7th, 2000 fans have flocked to this venue to see their beloved Astros compete for a chance at baseball immortality in the form of a World Series championship. Fulfilling that dream in 2017, the Houston faithful cheered on their team throughout the series and continue to support their heroes.
History meets innovation in this one of a kind ballpark as the stadium was constructed around the historic Union Station which now houses the ballpark’s main lobby as well as some Astros offices. Now a batter-friendly ballpark, this magnificent structure can be completely closed with a retractable roof and air-conditioned to battle the brutal Texas heat.

Established in 1962 and settling on the team name Houston Astros in 1964, this team spent 51 years in the National League before making the leap to the American League in 2013. The Astros moniker derives from Houston’s position at the center of the NASA space program. In all of their time in MLB Baseball, this team had one lone pennant to show for it, coming in the 2005 season. Their first trip to the World Series resulted in a sweep by the Chicago White Sox. However, that would all change in 2017.
Following a similar path to the Chicago Cubs during their latest rebuild, the results would launch the Houston Astros to a season record of 101-61, earning them first place in the AL West and punching their ticket to the postseason. Facing off against the intimidating Boston Red Sox in the ALDS, Houston came out strong to bounce the team from Beantown in four games.
A series to remember would follow, as the Astros faced the New York Yankees in the ALCS. Behind the pitching of Dallas Kuechel and Justin Verlander, Houston jumped out to a 2-0 lead before losing the next three games at Yankee Stadium. Returning home and facing elimination, Verlander took to the mound again and pitched a beauty, going seven scoreless innings en route to a 6-1 victory, setting up an all or nothing seventh game. Charlie Morton got the start and the team never looked back. Going five scoreless innings before handing it off to Lance McCullers to close it out, the pitching duo blanked the Yanks to win game seven 4-0 and capture their second pennant in team history.
No stranger to postseason adversity at this point, the Astros headed into the Fall Classic against a Los Angeles Dodgers team that had won 104 games in the regular season and had only lost one playoff game. A tough 3-1 loss in game one had everyone a little nervous, but the team came back strong to win games two and three to take control of the series before losing game four, tying it back up again. In their last game at Minute Maid Park for 2017, the Astros outlasted the Dodgers with an exciting 13-12 win in extra innings. The Dodgers would win game six at home, once again putting the Astros in a game seven scenario. In the biggest game of their lives, the Houston Astros left everything out on the field at Dodger Stadium and emerged victorious, outlasting LA to win game seven by a score of 5-1.
Finally champions of baseball, the Houston Astros made it to the top of the MLB. Inspired throughout the season by the toughness and resilience of their hometown in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, the Astros gave back to Houston in the form of something that everyone could celebrate, a World Series title.
Two years removed, the squad was largely still intact. A regular season record of 107-55 was the best in team history and earned them their third consecutive AL West title. Breezing past the Cleveland Guardians in the ALDS and then the Yankees in the ALCS, Houston found themselves back in the World Series. A hard-fought seven game series against the Nationals ended with Washington’s first World Series title.
More disappointment would come in the offseason when the story of the Astros sign stealing scandal broke. The resulting fallout led to the dismissal of GM Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch in addition to a $5 million fine and the forfeiture of the 1st and 2nd round draft picks in 2020 and 2021.
In late January, the Astros ownership introduced Dusty Baker as the new manager of the team. A longtime player and manager, Baker would bring stability to the situation in the wake of the scandal and get this team back to concentrating on baseball. He took over a team loaded with talent and would not let that go to waste.
Looking to put this ordeal behind them and get back to baseball, the Houston Astros had their plans changed along with the rest of the world by the Covid-19 pandemic. Facing a shortened season, the team galvanized around their cause to the tune of a 29-31 record which earned them second place in the AL West. They would blank the Twins in the Wild Card before moving past the Oakland Athletics three games to one in the ALDS. However, their World Series aspirations would be dashed by the Tampa Bay Rays in a seven game ALCS series.
Heading into the 2021 season, Martin Maldonado remained the starter behind the plate. Yuli Gurriel, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, and Carlos Correa would all take their normal spots in the infield while Kyle Tucker, Chas McCormick, and Michael Brantley patrol the outfield. 2019 AL Rookie of the Year winner Yordan Alvarez brings a big bat to the DH spot.
While Justin Verlander is likely to miss the entirety of the 2021 season to injury, the rotation still have star power in Zack Greinke, Lance McCullers, Framber Valdez, Luis Garcia, and Jake Odorizzi. Cristian Javier, a finalist for the AL Rookie of the Year Award, will also factor in. Ryan Pressly aims to close out Houston’s ballgames each night with Yimi Garcia setting him up.
Astros team history is rich with incredible players that have graced the field in their uniforms. Among these former players are Lance Berkman, Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, and Nolan Ryan.
