Entering into the MLB in 1961, under the ownership of legendary American performer Gene Autry, the Los Angeles Angels sought to build upon the California baseball trend started by the Dodgers and Giants, while capitalizing on its familiar name, a throwback to the old Pacific Coast League team.
Changing stadiums and names over the years, today’s team is officially known as the Los Angeles Angels. They make their home at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Autry gave his heart and soul to this franchise, and they showed their appreciation by retiring the number 26 in his honor (as there are only 25 players on an MLB team’s active roster, indicating that he is the 26th man).
Unfortunately, the architect of this great franchise did not get to participate in its greatest victory. Autry passed away at the age of 91 in 1998. The team soldiered on in his absence, achieving champion status in 2002 with a World Series title over the San Francisco Giants. Led by Troy Glaus, Garret Anderson, Darin Erstad, David Eckstein, Tim Salmon, John Lackey, Troy Percival, and Francisco Rodriquez, the Angels captured their first World Series in game seven at home.
Anchored by one of the most electrifying players in the game today in Mike Trout, the Angels are definitely not short on talent. Jared Walsh had a breakout rookie year and has taken over at first base for the legendary Albert Pujols. Contributions by way of David Fletcher, Anthony Rendon, Justin Upton, and Shohei Ohtani (the all-star sensation who pulls double duty as both a pitcher and DH for this club) are key to their success.
Ohtani leads the rotation for the Angels and pitchers Patrick Sandoval, Alex Cobb, Reid Detmers, and Jaime Barria make sure the Angels keep the score close in every game before Raisel Iglesias shuts it down.
Angels fans are ready to see the LA playoff drought come to an end so they can enjoy their favorite team well into the fall. Their first season under new manager Joe Maddon was a memorable one for the circumstances (Covid-19 and the subsequent pandemic-shortened season), but not so much for the outcome (26-34 for 4th place in the AL West and no playoff berth). LA is hopeful that things will get back to normal in 2021 and the Angels can take a big step forward as an organization en route to another World Series.
A collection of star players have taken the field for the Los Angeles Angels over the years, including Nolan Ryan, Rod Carew, Tim Salmon, Brian Downing, Garret Anderson, Jim Fregosi, Darin Erstad, and Chuck Finley. For more information about the Los Angeles Angels click here.
