The Amazin’ Mets have been dazzling the crowds out in Queens, NY since their inaugural season in 1962. A staple team in the National League East Division, the Mets have carved out a place for themselves in the Big Apple with diehard fans who bleed orange and blue.
The loyal fans who endured the team’s growing pains in their early years were rewarded with an improbable World Series victory in 1969 over the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles. Still thought of as one of the biggest upsets in World Series history, the team was nicknamed the Miracle Mets. Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman were dominant on the mound throughout this run and are still considered among the greatest players ever to wear the Mets uniform.
It wasn’t until 1986 that Mets fans celebrated another title in the Fall Classic. An incredible lineup, featuring star players Darryl Strawberry, Gary Carter, Keith Hernandez, and Dwight Gooden defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games to earn their ticker-tape parade through the Canyon of Heroes as champions of baseball.
Many lean years would follow, keeping the Mets away from top contention until the team acquired catcher Mike Piazza in 1998. An unprecedented World Series matchup would follow in 2000, featuring the New York Mets in a crosstown Subway Series against the rival New York Yankees. The five game series ended with a Yankees victory.
Following their last World Series appearance in 2015, the team has regressed and posted a record of 86-76 last season. This prompted the Mets front office to make the call to bring in a new manager for the team. This organization is intent on restoring a stronger record for the Mets and pushing for another World Series championship. Bringing in former Mets player Carlos Beltran to be the manager was supposed to usher in a new era, but his uncovered involvement in the 2017 Houston Astros sign-stealing scandal led him to a mutual parting of way before he could manage a single game.
Led by an incredible starting pitching rotation which includes Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, and Marcus Stroman, this group takes the field each day eager to shut out the opposing team. Closer Edwin Diaz had a great 2020 season and is exactly what this club needs to close out their games. Adding Carlos Carrasco to the roster via a blockbuster trade with Cleveland, this Mets rotation is looking top notch.
JD Davis, Michael Conforto, and 2019 MLB Home Run Champ Pete Alonso comprise a dangerous lineup that challenge opposing pitchers in every at bat. Jeff McNeil and James McCann are also solid contributors for this ball club. The deal with Cleveland also landed the Mets Francisco Lindor. This four-time all-star shortstop is one of baseball’s best players right now and is an instant upgrade both offensively and defensively. The Mets made another big move with the acquisition of Javier Baez from the Cubs. Baez is a former NL LCS MVP (2016) and NL RBI Leader (2018). New York is hoping to see him continue his great play in the Big Apple.
Despite the recent setbacks, Mets fans still believe that this team can overcome the obstacles and climb back up into playoff position for 2021. It will be a true test for the orange and blue. Faith in this ball club runs deep and Citi Field will be mobbed with a passionate fan base eager to cheer along their home town heroes.
