The city of brotherly love had been snake bitten when it came to championships. There hadn’t been a title won in Philadelphia professional sports since the 1983 76ers. Dejected fans had become accustomed to heartbreak when it came to their local sports teams. That all changed, however, when the Philadelphia Phillies lifted up the city in 2008 with a World Series victory that brought the city to its feet.
Citizens Bank Park was the scene for the 2008 Fall Classic as the Fightin’ Phils knocked out the Tampa Bay Rays to bring a World Series title to Philadelphia for the first time since 1980. The stars of this team, including Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins would permanently etch their names in Phillies lore alongside heroes like Mike Schmidt, Pete Rose, and Steve Carlton from the 1980 championship team.
Following the 2008 championship season, the Phillies made another run at the World Series in 2009, but fell to the New York Yankees in the Fall Classic. A few more great seasons would follow but, as with all teams, they eventually had to start over. The familiar star players would all eventually leave the team, putting management in the precarious position of having to rebuild their club into a contender again.
As part of the process, manager Gabe Kapler was let go after two years in the dugout in favor of Joe Girardi. A former major league catcher who has won the World Series as both a player and a manager, Girardi arrived in Philadelphia with big expectations from the fan base and the organization. His first season was a memorable one in that the world was going through a major pandemic, but not so memorable in terms of the 28-32 record the team produced. Girardi will, undoubtedly, be working towards a better outcome in 2021.
His starting rotation is in good shape, led by Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler. Zach Eflin, the newly acquired Kyle Gibson, and Ranger Suarez round out the starters on the mound. The Phillies upgraded their closer by trading with Texas for Ian Kennedy. Adding Jose Alvarado from Tampa via a three team trade may prove to be a big move. Phils fans are hoping to see him bounce back next season. Young Ranger Suarez is also getting the nod to emerge from the bullpen late in games, giving him much needed MLB experience.
The position players are starting to jell and become a solid unit. JT Realmuto calls the game from behind the player for Philadelphia. He locked up a five year deal to stay in Philadelphia to the tune of $115.5 million. Rhys Hoskins has settled into a good everyday player for the Phils. Jean Segura, Didi Gregorius, and Alec Bohm round out the infield while Andrew McCutchen and Odubel Herrera patrol the outfield along with Bryce Harper.
Harper was the biggest MLB free agent acquisition in recent years and has a lot to live up to. A monster 13 year deal worth $330 million dollars means that the organization has faith that this fiery competitor can lead this club to another championship. This is no easy task, especially in a town where the fans are quick to let you know when they disapprove. However, if Harper can produce and take this team to the World Series, he will be immortalized in the City of Brotherly Love. The early returns show that he is intent on taking them to the promised land.
General Manager Sam Fuld is sure to make other moves along the way as his club looks to make improvements and compete in the NL East for the chance to taste the postseason again.
Among the most loved players in Philadelphia history are Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Richie Ashburn, Chase Utley, Robin Roberts, Jimmy Rollins, Pete Rose, and Larry Bowa. For more information about the Philadelphia Phillies click here.
