When monetary issues forced the Washington Senators owner to look to other cities to be the home for his ball club, Arlington, Texas immediately stood out as the front runner. Its mayor had been trying to obtain a professional team for some time and already had a stadium built to Major League specifications. Approval was granted and the team moved to Texas for the 1972 season and adopted a new name, the Texas Rangers.
Although this franchise has never achieved the pinnacle of success in Major League Baseball, with no World Series titles to their credit, they have had a slew of legendary figures come through their city in the form of players, managers, and owners.
An Investment group headed by former President George W. Bush purchased the team back in 1989. While owner, Bush moved the team to a new stadium, Globe Life Park in Arlington. He left the team in 1994 when he was elected Governor of Texas and ultimately sold the team in 1998 before devoting himself to his presidential campaign.
The club’s first manager was Hall of Famer Ted Williams, who only stayed in Texas for one season, displeased over the move. Other notable managers through the years included Whitey Herzog, Billy Martin, Bobby Valentine, Buck Showalter, and Ron Washington.
Today, Chris Woodward serves as manager for the club and expects to be able to get the very best out of his club. Jose Trevino has all of the leadership and skill you could want, and continues to gain experience behind the plate. Isiah Kiner-Falefa is a Gold Glover looking to parlay his defensive prowess with better offense to be a major threat. Eli White and Adolis Garcia are important pieces in the outfield, with David Dahl joining the team while on what could be the verge of his becoming a star in this league. Willie Calhoun is also a major contributor.
The pitching rotation starts off with young talent in Dane Dunning, Kolby Allard, and Jordan Lyles. Texas is excited to see what they will have in Kohei Arihara who signed with the team from the Nippon Professional Baseball league in Japan. Jose Leclerc is out for the year, leading to Spencer Patton serving as the 2021 closer for the Rangers.
The Texas Rangers have a deep history of great talent. Some of the most revered players in Rangers history include Nolan Ryan, Ivan Rodriguez, Adrian Beltre, Michael Young, Juan Gonzalez, Josh Hamilton, and Rafael Palmeiro.
