Canadian Tire Centre
The Ottawa Senators moved into their current home, the Canadian Tire Centre, back in 1996. Since then, this multi-purpose arena located in the Suburban Ottawa community of Kanata has hosted a number of teams, but is primarily known for the Senators. Sens hockey is huge in Ottawa, and as such, the ownerships needed to make sure that they had a venue that matched the enthusiasm of the fan base.
This arena was originally constructed with hockey in mind. It has been in the works for years prior to the Senators even being granted a franchise. Able to convert for basketball games, lacrosse, concerts, and more, Canadian Tire Centre has hosted many large events over the years.

The second incarnation of the Ottawa Senators arrived in the NHL for the 1992-1993 season and, despite not immediately living up to expectations on the score sheet, the team was a hit with fans in Ontario and built a strong base of supporters.
The franchise took its name from the original Ottawa Senators, a team that dated back to 1883 and remained in Ottawa until 1934, before fleeing to St. Louis amid financial woes. However, the original Senators were a powerhouse in the early days of hockey, racking up 11 Stanley Cups, which is one more championship than the new team had wins in their inaugural season. It would be a long road ahead for the new Senators as they did not make the playoffs in their first four years.
However, hard work paid off for the franchise. After earning a postseason spot in 1997, Ottawa would make the playoffs for the next 11 seasons, which would include two trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and a 2007 appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. To date, the Senators have reached the playoffs 16 times in their 27 seasons of play.
Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach DJ Smith was brought aboard to be the new bench boss in Ottawa and bring this club back to the playoffs. His first season was shortened by the pandemic, but his team finished with a record of 25-34-12, keeping them out of the playoffs. His second season wasn’t any easier as the Senators would miss the playoffs again.
In order to accomplish the goal of getting back into the postseason, he will need strong play from everyone on his roster. Ottawa relies on their other veteran contributors for leadership. Among them are Brady Tkachuk, and Artem Anisimov. Connor Brown, Josh Norris, and Drake Batherson are also strong contributors. Goaltender Matt Murray has signed on for four years and $25 million to be the starting netminder for this club going forward.
This team is working on putting the 2020-2021 campaign in the rear window and jump up in the standings. A far cry from the 10 win team in their first season, the Ottawa Senators are usually known to be a formidable opponent in the Eastern Conference and a real threat to any team they play against. It may take some time to rebuild this team back into a contender, but Ottawa is committed to the process.
Ottawa has been fortunate enough to cheer on some amazing hockey players over the years including Mike Fisher, Dany Heatley, Chris Phillips, Marian Hossa, Wade Redden, Alexei Yashin, Jason Spezza, Craig Anderson, Erick Karlsson, and Daniel Alfredsson.
