An annual college football tradition dating back to 1935, the Sugar Bowl is tied for the second-oldest bowl game in the nation (after the Rose Bowl). Played each year in New Orleans, this game was hosted at Tulane Stadium until 1974 before moving to the Superdome. Displaced for one year after Hurricane Katrina, the game has been back at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome ever since.
The inaugural Sugar Bowl game was between Tulane and Temple. The local Tulane team won by a score of 20-14. In the years since, this bowl game has become one of the nation’s most anticipated and celebrated college football events.
Under the current format, the Allstate Sugar Bowl is usually played between the champions of the Big 12 and SEC. Additionally, it hosts one of two national semi-final playoff games every three years.
