An NCAA football game with more than 80 years of history, the Cotton Bowl Classic is a staple of the college football season. Introduced in 1937, this is the fifth oldest bowl game and has produced more than its fair share of action and memorable moments.
Originally played at the Cotton Bowl Stadium, the game was moved to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas after 72 years in its old home.
The 1970 game between Texas and Notre Dame (making their first postseason appearance in 45 years) came down to a 76 yard touchdown drive by the Longhorns to take the lead with just over a minute left. When time expired, Texas was the consensus national champion (as coaches polling declared its champion before the bowl games at that time). Notre Dame would get revenge the following season over Texas in the Cotton Bowl.
The 1972 “Chicken Soup” game was famous for being played during an ice storm in Dallas. Notre Dame QB Joe Montana was battling the flu and ate chicken soup in the locker room at half time before coming out and dominating to get the Irish the win.
The Cotton Bowl game between Houston and Nebraska in 1980 ended with a Houston touchdown caught between two defenders with just 12 seconds left on the clock. Houston finished on top 17-14. Georgia defeated an 11-0 Texas Longhorns team in 1984. This game always has something amazing!
Michigan State and Baylor battled in the 2015 Cotton Bowl game. Trading blows back and forth, this incredible game ended with a Spartans touchdown with just 17 seconds remaining to give then a 42-41 victory.
