Played annually since 1935, the Orange Bowl is one of the most popular games of the college football bowl season. Always held in the Miami metropolitan area, the inaugural game featured Bucknell going up against Miami. The final score of 26-0 had the Bisons of Bucknell coming out on top.
In the 85 years since, this game has grown along with the sport. While the first game had just over 5,000 in attendance, recent games have 65,000 plus in the stands cheering on their teams. The attendance record was set in 1990 with more nearly 82,000 in the stands at the original Miami Orange Bowl Stadium.
Largely considered to have been the best Orange Bowl (and some even consider the best college football game of all-time) was the Miami Hurricanes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers in 1984. Nebraska came into the game unbeaten and Miami had just one loss on the season. The Hurricanes jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter before Nebraska staged a comeback which would bring them within three points at the half. Miami came out hard to start the second half, bringing the score to 31-17 as the third quarter ended. In the epic final quarter, Nebraska’s 4th & 8 option play worked for the score. At 31-30, the extra point would have tied the game. The Cornhuskers went for the win and the two point conversion was broken up, bringing Miami the upset victory.
Hard Rock Stadium is the current home for this game.
