A relative newcomer to the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets were established as an expansion franchise in 1988. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina this team is still in search of their first championship.
Comprised mainly of aging veterans at the start, the Hornets had their work cut out for them in a league filled with superstars. Struggling through their early seasons, the organization worked hard to put together a strong team to play in front of an unbelievably supportive and loyal fan base. Despite the hardships on the court, the fans in Charlotte continued to come out night after night to rally on their hometown team.
In 1991, the Hornets were able to use their number one overall draft pick to select Larry Johnson. The next season, holding the number two draft pick, Charlotte selected Alonzo Mourning. These two acquisitions would change the complexion of the franchise. Injected with youth and talent, Charlotte would finish the 1992-1993 season with a 44-38 record, good enough to advance to the postseason for the first time in franchise history. A surprising first round win against Boston set up a second round series against the Knicks. Despite losing to New York, the Hornets had made a statement.
Johnson, Mourning, and point guard Muggsy Bogues had turned the Charlotte Hornets into one of the league’s most popular teams. The organization continued to build, adding Glen Rice for the 95-96 season. However, for all of their popularity and moves to get better, Charlotte was never able to get past the second round of the playoffs. As the relationship between the city and the ownership soured, a deal was eventually made to relocate the team to New Orleans in 2002.
Still hungry for basketball, the NBA awarded Charlotte a new franchise in 2004. The Charlotte Bobcats took to the floor later that year. A new lineup featuring Gerald Wallace and draft pick Emeka Okafor brought energy to the squad. NBA Legend Michael Jordan made a move to become minority owner of the team. He would eventually purchase the majority share in 2010.
The team struggled as the Bobcats, only making the playoffs twice between 2004 and 2014, both ending in first round sweeps. Jordan petitioned the league to change the name back to the Charlotte Hornets. New logos and jerseys would follow. While the excitement for the second incarnation of the Hornets was the buzz of the city, Charlotte has not yet been able to translate that support from their fans into a winning formula on the court.
The 2019-2020 team finished the season well outside the playoff bubble with a record of 23-42. Good times may be on the horizon, however. Owner Michael Jordan has installed former LA Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak to be the Hornets President and General Manager. Young head coach James Borrego endured a sophomore slump compounded with a pandemic, but is excited to see what he can do with this squad in the third year of his tenure with the Hornets. There was trepidation about the direction of the team after Kemba Walker and Jeremy Lamb left in free agency, and it has been difficult filling the holes in their absence.
However, this team has some good role players in place with Devonte’ Graham, Terry Rozier, PJ Washington, and Miles Bridges all giving their best efforts on the court. The signing of one more big time player would help to improve this team going forward. Charlotte took no chances in addressing this over the offseason. Selecting LaMelo Ball, the third overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, is bound to make a huge impact. He would become the Rookie of the Year for the 2020-2021 season. Also making a big impact if the monster signing of Gordon Hayward. Snagging this free agent on a four year $120 million dollar deal will definitely go a long way towards making this team into a contender.
Charlotte loves their former players. Chief among them are Kemba Walker, Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues, Glen Rice, Dell Curry, Baron Davis, and Gerald Wallace. Click here for additional information about the Charlotte Hornets.
