Founded as an NHL franchise during the expansion of 1967, the Stars were originally known as the Minnesota North Stars. Playing for a quarter century in Minnesota, the team moved to their current location in Dallas, Texas for the 1993-1994 season.
Fifty years of Stars hockey has produced a single championship team. The 1999 Dallas Stars were able to reach the summit of hockey’s highest mountain, overcoming a Buffalo Sabres team led by Hall of Fame netminder Dominik Hasek. The dramatic six game series ended with a controversial triple overtime goal scored by the great Brett Hull to lift the Stars to champion status. This great team was loaded with talent including Joe Nieuwendyk, Darian Hatcher, Craig Ludwig, Sergei Zubov, Ed Belfour, and the all-time leading goal scorer and points leader among American players, Mike Modano.
The Dallas Stars would repeat in 2000 as Western Conference Champions, but would fall short in their quest to become back to back Stanley Cup Champions. Facing off against another opponent with a Hall of Fame goaltender, the New Jersey Devils with Martin Brodeur, the Stars lost the hard fought series in six games. Never ones to give up easily, the Stars won game five by a score of 1-0 to push the series to a sixth game. It would take double overtime to decide game six, where the Devils ultimately prevailed with a 2-1 victory.
The goal of each successive Stars team has been to make it back to the Finals. While several Dallas Stars squads played well enough to make the playoffs, several even winning their division, none have been able to play into June and make it to the Stanley Cup Finals.
After a PR nightmare, the Stars parted ways with head coach Jim Montgomery due to unprofessional behavior. Assistant coach Rick Bowness would take over the head coaching duties on an interim basis. He inherits a tough team that is battling it out in the Central division.
Hosting their first outdoor game on New Year’s Day 2020 at the Cotton Bowl, the Dallas Stars hosted the NHL Winter Classic and won the game against the Nashville Predators by a score of 4-2.
Captain Jamie Benn is always ready to put his best foot forward in leading the group. Superstar Tyler Seguin repeated as points leader for Dallas. Veteran John Klingberg gives the lineup a boost both on and off the ice. Alexander Radulov is a great offensive talent. The Stars made some big moves in free agency, signing Joe Pavelski. This is a legendary player who brings a ton of professionalism and experience to the locker room. The defense is led by Miro Heiskanen and will be for the foreseeable future after he signed a monster extension to keep him in Dallas. Ben Bishop is a reliable starter in net for this group, but battled injuries that kept him sidelined. Veteran backup Anton Khudobin was ready to take over and was always able to remain calm, no matter how large the moment. He signed a new three year deal to stay in Dallas over the offseason.
Despite being in 3rd place in the Central Division when the Covid-19 pandemic put a halt to play, the Stars regrouped and galvanized into a force to be reckoned with once play resumed. Overcoming the Calgary Flames in the first round, Dallas was pushed to the brink in a seven game series with Colorado. Digging deep, the Stars were able to press on with a memorable 5-4 victory in overtime of game seven. Dallas shocked the favored Vegas Golden Knights in a five game series to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.
Standing between them and the Stanley Cup were the Tampa Bay Lightning. This finals series was one for the record books. Not only was it memorable for the circumstances surrounding it, but for how these players met the moment with incredible play and resilience. Despite the outcome going in favor of Tampa, these Dallas Stars should be very proud of themselves. They made the best of a very difficult situation and came within reach of hockey immortality.
While many had high hopes for this club going into the 2020-2021 season, Dallas struggled to win games. The Stanley Cup hangover proved too difficult for Dallas to overcome as they plummeted in the standings and would find themselves excluded from the playoffs at the end of the season. This team will, undoubtedly, work to come back with a vengeance next season.
