Comerica Park
The year 2000 marked a new beginning for fans of the Detroit Tigers. It not only ushered in a new millennium, but a new home stadium for their beloved baseball team as well. The old venue, which was known as Tigers Stadium at the time, could not endure another round of renovations, and closed its doors for good after an 88 year run. A new stadium would serve the community.
Comerica Park, the downtown Detroit open-air ballpark, became the new home of the Detroit Tigers of Major League Baseball. Originally considered to be a pitcher’s park, the walls were brought in and now the field is the 3rd most batter-friendly venue in the league.
Other changes have been made as the dust settled on this new facility. A flagpole which was originally brought in as an homage to Tigers Stadium had to be removed, the bull pen location was moved, and more seats were brought in. The newest change is a renovation to the Pepsi Porch which includes swapping the bleachers for stadium seating, as well as the addition of a new bar, couches, lounge chairs, and a fire pit. The constant state of improvement makes this a very attractive MLB venue.

Competing out of Major League Baseball’s American League Central Division, the Detroit Tigers have been thrilling fans in the Motor City since 1901. The Tigers are the oldest team to remain in the same city and keep the same name. That kind of consistency rolls right onto the field each season as the team is a constant threat to opponents on the baseball diamond.
A franchise history that dates back more than 115 years is bound to have produced some of the most legendary of MLB alumni. Among the greatest players to don the Tigers uniform are Al Kaline, Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer, Alan Trammell, Lou Whitaker, Harry Heilmann, Sam Crawford, and Hal Newhouser. However, the most famous player ever to grace the Detroit Tigers lineup is the controversial Ty Cobb. Known as a tremendous competitor with a mean streak, Cobb’s 22 seasons in Detroit resulted in an AL MVP, Triple Crown, home run title, numerous batting titles, RBI titles, stolen base titles, and Hall of Fame honors. The only thing missing from his illustrious career in the big leagues is a World Series title. The Tigers have earned four Fall Classic victories over the years with wins in 1935, 1945, 1968, and their most recent in 1984. The inspiration drawn from these former players motivates the current squad each day as they arrive at Comerica Park.
The front office has set out to take that raw inspiration and mold it into a formula for winning that will carry this team to the postseason and culminate in a World Series title. The team’s most recent trip to the World Series, a 2012 berth earned under former manager Jim Leyland ended in heartbreak. After defeating the New York Yankees in four straight ALCS games, the Tigers had the rug pulled out from under them, being swept by a San Francisco Giants team in the midst of a dynastic run.
Though time and roster turnover has put this loss in the past, it is still the number one priority of this organization to make it back to the biggest stage. To lead them in this pursuit, management has brought in A.J. Hinch. The former Astros skipper brings his experience to Detroit to revamp this ball club. Last season’s 23-35 record was below expectations and Hinch intends to right the ship. They will need to make some big changes to climb back into contention.
Designated Hitter Miguel Cabrera continues to lead this team. However, the cast around him appears to be changing quickly. Grayson Geiner, Eric Haase, Jonathan Schoop, and Zack Short are always ready to take the field, but the organization is constantly on the lookout for upgrades. Akil Baddoo, Derek Hill, and Robbie Grossman lead the charge from the outfield.
Pitchers Tarik Skubal, Casey Mize, Wily Peralta, Jose Urena, and Tyler Alexander are all capable of success, but the key will be how Hinch manages them throughout the long and arduous season. Gregory Soto and Jose Cisnero are effective late in games and can shut down the competition.
Uplifting the spirits of a city going through rough economic times, the energetic atmosphere at Detroit Tigers games keeps the fans filling the seats each night. For more information about the current Detroit Tigers team, as well as the history of the club, click here.
