Entertain Guests at a LAS VEGAS RAIDERS home game AT ALLEGIANT STADIUM!
The Las Vegas Raiders are a storied NFL franchise with a rich history deeply rooted in winning. A tradition stemming from the late Al Davis’s “Commitment to Excellence” slogan, the Raiders gained notoriety and a national following through their dominant physical play throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Their winning culture, which culminated in three Super Bowl victories to go along with an AFL Championship from their tenure prior to the merger, brought the Raiders into the spotlight as a team known for their punishing style of football.
After the merger, Head Coach John Madden focused his team on controlling the NFL through dominant defense. The Raiders, ripe with Hall of Fame talent, would make the playoffs seven out of the next eight seasons, including their first Super Bowl win in 1976.
Madden walked away after 10 consecutive winning seasons and a Super Bowl Trophy to go on to a brilliant career as a television commentator. The departure did not stop the Silver and Black, who went on to win Super Bowls in 1980 and 1983 (their only title during the Los Angeles Raiders years). Team owner Al Davis trademarked the term “Just Win, Baby!” and he clearly lived by that credo.
That championship culture, however, began to dissolve in the late 80s and by the early 90s the team had fallen into mediocrity. A mix of retirements, players traded away, and failed draft picks brought this powerhouse back to the middle of the pack. A move back to Oakland prior to the 1995 season and a flurry of new faces breathed new life into the franchise. They would climb out from the bottom of the standings and reach championship level play again with an AFC Championship appearance in 2001 (largely remembered as the Tuck Rule Game). Unfortunately, this period did not last and by 2003 the Raiders were back in disrepair and would remain there for more than a decade.
They would not, however, remain in Oakland. It was announced in 2017 that current team owner Mark Davis won the necessary votes to move the team to Las Vegas. While the Raiders would play in Oakland through 2019, the team officially moved to Sin City to become the Las Vegas Raiders starting in 2020.
Jon Gruden is the current head coach. In his second stint with the organization, Gruden is intent on doing what he could not in his first run, win a Super Bowl. His second year back with the Raiders was more fruitful than 2018, as Oakland earned more difficult wins with their veteran QB Derek Carr. In fact, the entire team played with a tougher attitude as they began to truly embody the Gruden way. Commanding a huge salary, Gruden’s aim is to live up to his contact by bringing the hardware back to Raider Nation. The 2020 season saw them improve to 8-8. However, this is not enough to satisfy anyone on this team as they look to win the division in 2021. The Raiders aim to give Carr a little more time and space in the pocket by bringing in a young offensive tackle. Alex Leatherwood out of Alabama was selected at number 17 in the 2021 NFL Draft.
Drafting Josh Jacobs out of Alabama with the 24th overall pick in 2019, the Raiders put their faith in this young ball carrier and he has not disappointed. Racking up over 1,100 yards in his rookie year, he was able to go over 1,000 again in 2020. The receiving game is very young. Henry Ruggs III and Bryan Edwards are both rookies (taken in the first and third rounds respectively), while Hunter Renfrow looks to expand on a solid rookie campaign.
The defense has been missing a big veteran presence that galvanizes the group. The play of linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski could be that piece. Clelin Ferrell, the Raiders number four overall pick from 2019, carved out his spot on this squad. A promising defensive end, Ferrell is looking to take down the opposing QB on every play along with Maxx Crosby. Oakland also found a starter in Trayvon Mullen from Clemson as well. Taken in the second round in 2019, Mullen patrols the outfield at cornerback along with Damon Arnette, who was added to the squad via the 2020 NFL Draft. The cornerback was selected by Las Vegas as the 19th overall pick.
While there has been no shortage of NFL Hall of Fame players to have dressed in the iconic silver and black, a few names stand out among the rest for their unending efforts on the field and famous play which has made them hometown heroes. Among this group are George Blanda, Jim Plunkett, Dave Casper, Fred Biletnikoff, Cliff Branch, Ted Hendricks, Jim Otto, Ken Stabler, Howie Long, Willie Brown, Tim Brown, Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Bo Jackson, and Marcus Allen.
