SOFI STADIUM
Inglewood, California is the home of a brand new NFL stadium. Opening for the 2020 season, SoFi Stadium was erected at the former site of the Hollywood Park Racetrack. Its close proximity to LAX and The Forum makes it a desirable destination. Hollywood Park Casino is also located on the grounds.
This indoor-outdoor venue is truly state of the art and intends to revolutionize the fan experience. However, the cream of the crop at SoFi Stadium are the incredible luxury suites. After spending 56 years in San Diego, the NFL’s Chargers packed their bags and moved 2 hours north to Los Angeles, California. The move, not without controversy, started a new chapter for Chargers football. The team actually originated in 1959 as an AFL team and played their first season in Los Angeles before moving to San Diego. Switching to the NFL in 1970, the Chargers became members of the AFC West and remain so to this day.
An AFL powerhouse in their early years, the Chargers reached the AFL Championship game five times, winning it all in 1963. Since the merger, the Chargers have reached the playoffs 14 times, advancing to the Super Bowl in 1994 where they would lose to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 49-26.
In the more than 25 years since this Super Bowl, the Chargers have seen a number of star players and coaches try to help them achieve their goal of bringing a title home. Today, in their new home of Los Angeles, the Chargers franchise is in the capable hands of new head coach, Brandon Staley. Coming from the Rams, where he served as the defensive coordinator, Staley brings a hard-nosed defensive mentality to the team which is frustrating to the opposition.
He can rest easy knowing that he has a franchise quarterback in Justin Herbert. Lighting up the league, Herbert capped off his fantastic rookie season by setting NFL rookie records for most passing touchdowns (31), most total touchdowns (36), most completions (396), most 300 yard games (8) and most games with multiple touchdowns (10). He was 39 yards shy of the record for most passing yards by a rookie. And he didn’t even play in week one! Selected sixth overall in the 2020 draft, this QB out of Oregon is definitely the face of the franchise moving forward. The Chargers are investing in the offensive line to protect him and used their 13th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to take Rashawn Slater, an offensive tackle of out Northwestern.
The Los Angeles Chargers attack the field with an unprecedented motivation that is keeping the opposing teams on their toes. Austin Ekeler is a fearsome running back that can explode for a big gain on almost any play. Overflowing with talent at the wide receiver position, Herbert has his choice between Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Tight end Hunter Henry shined as their starter, but left for New England in free agency. The Chargers signed veteran Jared Cook to take over the role.
The defense settled into the middle of the pack, but has the potential to be dominant and dangerous, with a tenacious pass rush coming from Joey Bosa. Add to the mix Jerry Tillery, a defensive tackle out of Notre Dame that the Chargers took 28th overall in the 2019 NFL draft, and veteran Linval Joseph. Linebacker Leonard Floyd makes his presence known on the field, while the backfield, featuring Pro Bowler Derwin James and Nasir Adderley, always cause problems for the opposing offense. The linebacking corp got even deeper after the Chargers took Kenneth Murray with the 23rd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Coach Staley will definitely have a hand in molding this group into a stronger squad.
The team’s record of 7-9 in 2020 earned them a third place finish in the AFC West. Missing the playoffs, it was a learning experience for this team and the 2021 season will be very a very interesting one for the Chargers.
Never short on talent, this franchise has employed some great NFL players over the years. Among the most beloved players to don the white helmet with the lightning bolt on it are LaDainian Tomlinson, Junior Seau, Antonio Gates, Dan Fouts, Kellen Winslow, Lance Alworth, and Philip Rivers.
