Los Angeles Lakers luxury suites are ideal for entertaining clients
A basketball franchise that has enjoyed immense success in the form of 17 NBA championships over the years, the Lakers started out in Minnesota back in 1947. They were assembled from the folded Detroit Gems and called Minneapolis home, naming themselves after the state’s nickname “Land of 10,000 Lakes”.
Powered by George Mikan, the first bona fide star of the NBA, the Lakers captured several titles in their early history, despite financial problems which ultimately caused the team to uproot and move to Los Angeles for a fresh start. Despite the business turmoil, the team continued to win.
Racking up championship after championship in the 1950s, the Lakers saw a championship drought in the 1960s. Despite repeated trips to the NBA Finals with star players like Elgin Baylor and Jerry West, they were bested by the Boston Celtics over and over, leading to one of the biggest rivalries in all of Basketball. Even the addition of Wilt Chamberlain could not bring the title back to the City of Angels. 1972 saw the Lakers finally recapture the title, but a repeat was not in the cards as the championship would not belong to LA again until 1980.
The team turned the page and started a new chapter in their history in 1980. Under Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson, the Lakers recaptured their early greatness, putting on an electrifying show night after night in front of a hometown crowd which would include some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. The Showtime Lakers would win five titles in the 80s with contributions from James Worthy and head coach Pat Riley.
Following exits by Abdul-Jabbar and Johnson in the early 90s, the Lakers went through a lull. However, the lull did not last very long with the Lakers rising to prominence once again in 1996 with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal joining the team under head coach Phil Jackson. Today, O’Neal and Jackson are Hall of Famers with Bryant to follow suit as soon as he is eligible. Together, the trio took home the title as NBA Champions in 2000, 2001, and 2002. Bryant and Jackson would go on to win again in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2010, earning a place in NBA history as one of the most decorated franchises.
Bryant retired from basketball in 2016 with accolades including 5 NBA Championships, 2 NBA Finals MVPs, 18 NBA All Star selections, 4 All Star MVPs, 11 All-NBA First Team selections, and many more. Basketball fans around the world were shocked to hear of his tragic passing in January of 2020. He will be enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame later this year where his impact on the game will continue to be felt forever.
LeBron James would sign as a free agent in 2018, but the team just couldn’t jell together during his first season in LA. Frank Vogel signed on to serve as head coach after the 2018-2019 season as the team underwent a major transition. The entire roster was shaken up in a multi-team deal that landed Anthony Davis in LA. A bonafide star, Davis compliments LeBron James well on the court. They will remain with the team and both signed extensions this offseason. James re-upped with the Lakers for 2 years and $85 million while Davis signed on for five years and $190 million in max extension.
In the 2020 offseason, Danny Green was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Al Horford. Rajon Rondo left for Atlanta via free agency. However, LA was able to sign Marc Gasol on a new two year deal. The Lakers made another smart move late in the 2020-2021 season by signing Andre Drummond. One of the best centers in the league, LA is glad to add him to the roster.
After all of these changes, only one thing is certain: LA was back. A stellar record of 52-19 in the pandemic-shortened season brought the team to the playoffs with the first seed in the Western Conference. Breezing through Portland and Houston, both eliminated in five games, the Lakers moved on to crush the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals. This five game series set up the Lakers to face off against the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals. LeBron facing his former team made for a great storyline, but the series was even better. Miami threw everything it had at this Lakers squad, but LA emerged victorious in six games to become NBA champions again.
As the 2020-2021 season started, everyone was focused on repeating as champions. However, this is no easy task. The season brought its fair share of trials and tribulations. Injuries piled up and their record suffered as a result. The 42-30 record LA put up was enough to squeak into the playoffs as the seventh seed in the west. However, it would be in the opening round where things ended for LeBron and company. The Phoenix Suns charged out of the gate and put down the Lakers in six games. This group is still loaded with talent and will work towards getting healthy for the 2021-2022 season so that they can make a run at regaining the crown.
