LoanDepot Park
The year 2012 signified a change for the Marlins. Moving from Sun Life Stadium (now known as Hard Rock Stadium) to their new home at LoanDepot Park, the team changed their name to match their new stadium. No longer known as the Florida Marlins, the Miami Marlins also decided to change their uniform logo and colors for a completely revamped look.
While the changes to the team name and the aesthetics of their look may be one thing, it pales in comparison to the gargantuan change in venues. Miami Dolphins founder Joe Robbie believed that baseball would be coming to Florida one day, and built the old stadium so that it would be able to hold a team in the future. His premonition turned out to be right and the Marlins moved in to start the 1993 season. However, in all their years in the old park, it was never truly meant for baseball. The same cannot be said of LoanDepot Park. The owner of the Miami Marlins at the time, Jeffrey Loria, challenged architects to make a piece of art. He wanted a design that was unique to and for baseball, which looked to the future while encapsulating everything that is Miami. The result is one of the most magnificent parks in the country.
The exterior of the building has a sculptural quality which incorporates the culture of Miami into the architectural design. The materials, angles, and colors are all meant to give the ballpark a unique sense of identity. It achieves this ambition, as this venue would look out of place anywhere other than Miami. The vision for this stadium continues inside the gates with art melding with technology for a blend that makes this a one of a kind experience.
While the ambience may be modern in a way no other ballpark has been able to accomplish, the product on the field is an American tradition. That said, the best way to experience a Miami Marlins baseball game is in a private luxury suite.

After a quarter century of Marlins baseball, this Miami-based franchise already has two World Series titles to show for their time in the big leagues. America’s pastime is alive and well, particularly in sunny Florida where the cooperative weather allows kids to play year round. The Marlins have garnered a strong following around South Beach and have used that energy to motivate themselves along the base path.
Originally established in 1993 as the Florida Marlins, the team joined the National League’s East Division. Earning wild card berths in 1997 and 2003, the Marlins went on to championships in both seasons. However, they have never won their division to date.
The most famous play in team history came in the 1997 World Series. Tied at three games apiece with the American League champion Cleveland Guardians, the deciding seventh game went into extra innings. Edgar Renteria stepped to the plate with two outs and the bases loaded for the Marlins in the bottom of the 11th inning. Lining a shot up the middle, Craig Counsell was able to score from third on a walk-off single to win the World Series.
The current squad is led by former Major Leaguer Don Mattingly. Following a stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Mattingly moved to South Florida to take over the Marlins dugout. Donnie Baseball’s club is hoping to improve their record in 2021. Mattingly is reunited in Miami with Derek Jeter, the former Yankee great who purchased a stake in the team and currently serves as the CEO. Hoping to take a page from the Yankees playbook, the Marlins are hard at work towards capturing another title.
Despite the pandemic, Miami put together a 31-29 season in 2020 which earned them second place in the NL East and a playoff berth. After sweeping the Cubs, Miami ran into a punishing Braves club that sent them home after three straight losses.
A farm system lacking in talent meant that the Marlins weren’t expected to grow from within. However, trading away a lot of talented players to reload the farm system was a tough management decision that would mean the Marlins would have a rough go of it as those new prospects develop. The organization is hoping that some more of these prospects begin to bloom in 2021.
Jorge Alfaro and Sandy Leon are both great options behind the plate and work in tandem to call the shots for this team. Jesus Aguilar, Jazz Chisholm, Brian Anderson, and Miguel Rojas round out the infield. Outfielders Magneuris Sierra and Bryan De La Cruz track down deep balls alongside rookie Jesus Sanchez.
Pitching is critically important and Sandy Alcantara and Pablo Lopez make for a strong combination, while Trevor Rogers holds the top spot. Zach Thompson and Cody Poteet are trending in the right direction and hope to be just as effective. After moving Yimi Garcia at the trade deadline, Dylan Floro has become new closer going forward.
Fans in Miami have been lucky enough to watch some great players in the relatively short time that this franchise has been active. Among those favored in the area are Hanley Ramirez, Giancarlo Stanton, Miguel Cabrera, Gary Sheffield, Kevin Brown, Josh Johnson, and Jose Fernandez.
