USB ARENA
Opening for the 2021-2022 hockey season, the USB Arena will be the new home of New York Islanders hockey. This project took many years to fully form, but finally got the greenlight in 2019 to begin construction. Completed on time, despite a pause due to Covid, this new arena is a beautiful facility.
Islanders fans will have to adjust to their new home. After moving to the Barclays Center a few years ago, the team ended up moving back to their previous home, Nassau Coliseum. It became clear that the new arena belonged on the island where the die-hard fans could cheer on their hometown team.
Located within Belmont Park, this arena has a design inspired by landmarks including Ebbets Field, Central Park, and the Grand Central Terminal. The intimate bowl setting allows for excellent sightlines while maximizing crowd volume to pump up the Islanders and strike fear into the hearts of the opponents.
The USB Arena luxury suites are the pinnacle of comfort and style within this impressive venue. Each suite is constructed to maximize comfort for guests and are perfect for hosting. The latest technology has these modern suites looking great to go along with excellent views of the ice. Representing New York and splitting their time during the 2018-19 season between the borough of Brooklyn and Nassau County, the New York Islanders are a team in constant pursuit of another dynastic period for their franchise. Following their inception into the NHL back in 1972, success quickly found the club. Following two miserable years, the management’s plan of growing the team through the draft began to pay off with the Isles making the playoffs in their third season. This marked the beginning of 14 straight playoff runs which would include four Stanley Cup championships.
Despite amazing regular season numbers, the first several years ended in disappointing playoff losses. However, the team prevailed and continued to pick up more talented players along the way. Head Coach Al Arbour decided in 1980 to concentrate less on the regular season record and instead shift his focus toward getting his players ready for a grueling playoff tournament. This mindset paid off immediately as the Islanders went on to win their first Stanley Cup over the Philadelphia Flyers.
The Islanders had ushered in a new age of hockey dominance as they would repeat as champions again the next season, ultimately winning four Stanley Cups in a row. The dynasty eventually ended in 1984 when the Islanders lost in the finals to the Edmonton Oilers, who were about to embark on their own dynasty. After 19 straight playoff series wins, the Islanders spent the offseason without a championship title.
While competitive throughout the rest of the 1980s, the players of this once great dynasty began to go their separate ways. Eventually, the Islanders went from perennial championship contenders to the bottom of the standings. A new rebuilding project went into effect and through draft picks and trades the team began to rebound with a new core group.
Missteps in management led to many changes in coaches and general manager which brought the team further into a downward spiral. A completely dysfunctional franchise, the Islanders even went through scandals involving the sale of the team. However, even after the eventual sale of the team, continued mistakes with trades and draft picks plagued the Islanders.
Islanders management is committed making whatever changes necessary to reach the next level as a team. The new regime for the Isles will be looking to make the playoffs consistently and capture the first division title for the Islanders since 1988. They do so with Barry Trotz behind the bench. Fresh off his Stanley Cup victory as the head coach of the Washington Capitals, Trotz came to New York to turn this franchise into a winner. His first season saw a 13 win increase from the year before, jumping from sixth place in the Metropolitan division to second and a playoff appearance which extended to the second round of the tournament.
In both his second and third years with the team, the Islanders have continued to thrive, making it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. However, they were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 2020-2021 season ended in a 1-0 game seven that featured both of these powerhouse teams firing on all cylinders. The goaltenders were at their best, but all it took was one short-handed goal by Tampa to advance. Trotz and company are chomping at the bit to get the 2021-2022 season started in hopes that they can make it over the hump and compete in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Anders Lee was named captain of the club at the beginning of the 2018-2019 season. His leadership is paramount to the success of the club. Also vitally important to the team is Mathew Barzal. His 85 point rookie season earned him the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year and subsequent seasons have proved it to be no fluke. Now as a young veteran, Barzal aims to push his team to greatness. Brock Nelson, Anthony Beauvillier, and Josh Bailey all contribute in key roles. Jean-Gabriel Pageau is looking to take on a significant role after coming over from Ottawa and signing a six year deal with Islanders.
Making an upgrade at the deadline, the Isles picked up Travis Zajac and Kyle Palmieri from the New Jersey Devils. Giving up two players in addition to a first round draft pick in 2021 and a fourth round pick in 2022, the Islanders are sending a message to the league that they are ready to win now and are making a run for the Cup.
Semyon Varlamov is an excellent starting netminder and Thomas Greiss is a quality backup. Trotz has the luxury of knowing that whoever gets the nod will post a great outing for the Islanders.
The list of great players who have played as a member of this franchise goes on forever, but the best among them include Butch Goring, John Tonelli, Pat LaFontaine, Bob Bourne, Brent Sutter, Clark Gillies, Billy Smith, Bobby Nystrom, Bryan Trottier, Mike Bossy, John Tavares, and Denis Potvin.
