“We’re going to win the game. I guarantee it.” Those famous words spoken by Joe Namath prophesized an unlikely championship victory against the heavily favored Baltimore Colts back in 1969. The confidence and bravado that fans were accustomed to from their franchise quarterback was backed up with phenomenal play on both sides of the ball for the New York Jets as they defeated the Colts by a score of 16-7 in Super Bowl III. This legendary tale represents the highest point in the history of this team.
Fans of Gang Green suffered through many seasons that would be described as mediocre at best following their lone championship season. Owner Woody Johnson is hoping that the present-day team could be the group to turn things around. He is committed to the future of this club, and is not afraid to take drastic action if he feels it is necessary.
The Jets zeroed in on BYU’s Zach Wilson in the 2021 draft to be the new quarterback and snatched him up with the number two overall pick. Wilson stepped into the team as the new starting QB and there were high expectations for him. The Jets used their other first round pick (14th overall) to take offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker out of USC. His job is to keep Wilson upright and help give him time to make a play.
The season played out with the Jets finishing 4-13 and in fourth place in the AFC East. Despite the disappointing record, and Wilson missing four games due to injury, he showed flashes of talent that have Jets fans eager to see what he can do with a little more time under his belt and with a few upgraded pieces around him. Wilson was sacked 44 times in his rookie season. While some of these may be chalked up to a rookie holding onto the ball too long, too many sacks came as a result of the offensive line. Head coach Robert Saleh is intent on improving this for 2022. New York has also signed veteran quarterback and former Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to serve as Wilson’s backup.
New York is also aiming to improve their run game. Second round draft pick Breece Hall will carry the ball in tandem with second year back Michael Carter, hopefully establishing a one-two punch on the ground with these young running backs. In the passing game, the ball is spread around to a number of receivers including Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, and Braxton Berrios. Locking in tight ends Tyler Conklin and CJ Uzomah shows the Jets commitment to opening up the play book.
The Jets had the number three overall pick in the 2019 draft and used it to select Quinnen Williams, a defensive tackle out of Alabama. He has turned into a solid starter, bringing down quarterbacks along with John Franklin-Myers. CJ Mosley, Quincy Williams, Sauce Gardner, and Lamarcus Joyner are all reliable performers. Saleh is hoping to bring this group further in 2022 and adding on talent in free agency with cornerback DJ Reed and safety Jordan Whitehead should go a long way toward bolstering this group. It is a work in progress as the Jets have their sights set on a brighter horizon.
Legends of the gridiron including Joe Namath, Don Maynard, Joe Klecko, Curtis Martin, Mark Gastineau, and Darrelle Revis have all worn the green and white jersey of the New York Jets. More about the history of the New York Jets can be found by clicking here.
