FOOTPRINT CENTER
Downtown Phoenix is the place to be when it comes to basketball with no location being of greater significance than the Footprint Center. The home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns since 1992, this wonderful venue is also home to the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA as well as the Arizona Rattlers of the AFL.
Capacity crowds top out at over 18,000, making it a difficult place for any opposing team to play. From hosting Suns regular season games to the playoffs (including the NBA Finals in 1993), the NBA All-Star Game in 1995 and 2009, to the WNBA All-Star Game in 2008 and the WNBA Finals in 2007 and 2009, some very important basketball games have taken place here. Add to the equation two ArenaBowl games, major boxing matches, Professional Bull Riders, and a long list of major concerts and you can see why this is a red hot venue in the desert.

A Western Conference Pacific Division staple since their inception in 1968, the Phoenix Suns represent the state of Arizona in the National Basketball League. Only two conference titles have been won by Phoenix and neither resulted in an NBA Championship, leaving the Suns and their fans to continue their search for their first ring.
Going against the odds to establish a successful franchise in Phoenix, the Suns struggled through their early years. A sub .500 performance in 1970 saw them bounced by the Lakers in the first round. Their next playoff appearance would not be until 1976 with a very different roster. The unlikely postseason run brought Phoenix all the way to the Finals where they would face off against the Boston Celtics. Phoenix fought hard, particularly in an amazing game five which took three overtimes to decide, before eventually falling in six games.
While the Suns lost out on the championship, the run did seem to spur a major change for the organization. After missing the playoffs the next year, the Suns would advance to the playoffs for the next eight seasons. This was disrupted in the mid-1980s due to some personnel issues. Following the sale of the team at the start of the 1987-1988 season, the Suns would miss the playoffs before going on another streak of playoff appearances that would last from 1989 until 2001. This would include Phoenix’s only other Finals appearance.
Following the 1992-1993 season, in which they would set a franchise record for wins at 62, the Suns and their new leader, Charles Barkley, pushed past the Lakers and Spurs before going a full seven games against the Seattle SuperSonics. Coming out on top in that series to reach the NBA Finals, the Suns matched up against Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. This hard fought series featured a triple overtime game, but Phoenix would, again, lose the championship series in six games. The Suns would continue to make the playoffs for the next eight seasons but would not reach the Finals again, nor would they despite three trips to the Conference Finals between 2005 and 2010 with star power from Steve Nash.
The Suns did not make the playoffs from 2010 to 2020. Their 19 wins in 2018-2019 was second worst in franchise history, only better than their inaugural season. Phoenix was going through a major playoff drought. Despite the many losses, the Phoenix faithful still rooted for their team and hoped that a turnaround was in the works that would bring this franchise back to prominence. The 2020 season saw a marked improvement, jumping to 34 wins in a pandemic-shortened regular season and Phoenix built on that for 2021.
Today’s team is led by Devin Booker and Paul George. Booker was selected 13th overall back in 2015 and has developed into an incredible shooting guard. Paul was taken 4th overall back in 2005 and has been an elite player ever since. A future hall of famer, this point guard joined the team via a trade from Oklahoma City earlier in the season. He quickly found his footing with the club and has been a big part of their success. Great play and phenomenal leadership from these two have really gotten this franchise going.
Deandre Ayton was selected number one overall in the 2018 draft and has developed into a solid starter. Mikal Bridges was also a top ten pick traded from Philadelphia. Jae Crowder rounds out the starting five after signing with the Suns earlier in the season.
Monty Williams took over as head coach last season and, after finishing in 3rd place in the Pacific with a record of 34-39, turned this team around in his sophomore campaign. The 2020-2021 Phoenix Suns surged to a 51-21 record to win the division. The impressive 17 win improvement over the previous year set them up in the playoffs as the number two seed in the Western Conference.
Phoenix eliminated the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the opening round in six games before moving on to smoke Denver in four straight. The Western Conference Finals, in which Phoenix squared off against the LA Clippers, was a great series. The arena went nuts at the end of game two when Jae Crowder inbounded a pass to Deandre Ayton for a buzzer-beater shot that saw the Suns win 104-103. The Suns would win the series in six games to advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1993.
Facing a tough Milwaukee Bucks team, Phoenix threw everything they had at them. Jumping out to a 2-0 lead, The Suns felt confident heading to Milwaukee for games three and four. The Bucks had other plans, though, and came out strong in game three. Evening the series at two games apiece, Phoenix was glad to head home for game five where they aimed to take back control. However, Milwaukee kept pouring it on, winning in Phoenix 123-119. Devin Booker scoring 40+ points in both games four and five were not enough to get the victory. With their backs against the wall, the Suns headed back to enemy territory for game six. A tough game was played on the court that night and, when the dust settled, Phoenix went back to the locker room defeated. A 105-98 Bucks win ended the Suns season as Milwaukee took the championship.
Heartbroken, the players on this team still have a lot of reason to be proud. They have come a long way and have a shot at getting back to the Finals next season. Rest assured that they will put in the necessary work to rise to this level again.
This team can always look to their predecessors for inspiration. Phoenix has had no shortage of legendary ball players come through their city including Steve Nash, Charles Barkley, Amar’e Stoudemire, Kevin Johnson, Shawn Marion, Tom Chambers, Jason Kidd, Dan Majerle, and Devin Booker.
