Petco Park
Moving from Qualcomm Stadium and the only home they’d ever known after the 2003 season, Petco Park opened for the San Diego Padres in 2004. This beautiful park, located in the downtown area of San Diego, is one of the best ballparks in America and is complimented by the exquisite local weather.
The changing backdrop of the ongoing construction in San Diego’s downtown skyline makes the park feel as though it is constantly changing. Within the walls of the venue, there have been many changes made in order to make the park more advantageous to hitters. The outfield walls were moved in and the out-of-town scoreboard was relocated.
The ambience of this park is different from other stadiums around the league. Featuring sandstone and stucco, the edifice has its exposed steel painted white to go along with dark blue fixed seats. This style is meant to bring about thoughts of the San Diego beaches, blue ocean, and white sails of passing boats.
From hosting the 2016 MLB All Star Game to several major concerts, Petco Park is a premier venue in the San Diego region. It is no wonder why these events are held at this venue as it boasts several amenities that promote extreme comfort. Beautiful San Diego, California is the backdrop for this National League West team still searching for its first World Series victory. While more than 50 years of professional baseball has resulted in exactly one World Series game win (coming in 1984 against the Detroit Tigers – the Padres were swept by the New York Yankees in the 1998 World Series), the Padres have put together an endearing history rich with talent and die-hard fans.
Originally a Pacific Coast League minor league franchise (most notably known for winning the 1937 title with future Hall of Famer Ted Williams on the field), the Padres made the jump to the big leagues in 1969 as an expansion team.
Fans attend home games at Petco Park each season with passionate love for their franchise. They have seen many great players don the Padres uniform over the years including Randy Jones, a left-handed starting pitcher that earned accolades including two All-Star appearances, two team MVPs, and a Cy Young Award in 1976. Baseball Hall of Famer Dave Winfield was a member of the team over that same span, boasting four All-Star nods while with the club to go along with two Gold Glove Awards and two team MVPs.
Ken Caminiti is a name that garners warm feelings for Padres fans. They remember him best for his tenacity on the diamond which earned him two All-Star appearances in addition to three Gold Glove Awards, a Silver Slugger Award, a team MVP and a league MVP.
Jake Peavy is another Padres alumni with a Cy Young Award to his credit. He earned it back in 2007. He also made two All-Star appearances and won the Pitching Triple Crown in 2008. Longtime Padre Trevor Hoffman was named to six All-Star teams, was in the running for MVP and Cy Young multiple times, and twice led the league in saves during his Hall of Fame career.
However, when baseball fans think of San Diego, one name stands out above all else. Tony Gwynn, the first ballot Hall of Famer who spent his entire 20 year career with the Padres, is remembered as the embodiment of Padres baseball. Among his many accomplishments were an incredible 15 All-Star appearances, five Gold Glove Awards, seven Silver Slugger Awards, and eight National League batting titles. His untimely death in 2014 was mourned throughout the league as he was a true ambassador for the game and is widely considered to be the best San Diego Padres player of all-time.
Beginning to emerge from a massive team overhaul, current Padres club is starting to establish a new identity for themselves. Going all in on Manny Machado, San Diego had awarded the coveted infielder a 10 year contract for $300 million. The clear centerpiece of the Padres rebuild, Machado has found himself surrounded by talent in Eric Hosmer, Austin Nola, and Fernando Tatis Jr. (who just signed a 14 year extension worth a whopping $340 million). Signing Ha-Seong Kim, a huge star infielder from the Korea Baseball Organization adds another sensational player to this roster.
The outfield features strong competitors in Trent Grisham, Wil Myers, and Tommy Pham. These three came together last year and formed a formidable trio for San Diego.
New manager Jayce Tingler was tasked with reinvigorating a team that won just 70 games in 2019. In the middle of a global pandemic, Tingler got his group focused on the diamond and produced a 37-23 record for second place in the NL West. This performance pushed the Padres into the postseason where they would advance past the St. Louis Cardinals before being eliminated by the eventual World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
Making a big move in the offseason, the Padres snagged Blake Snell away from Tampa Bay in a big trade. The 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner plays a big role for this club. So, too, does Yu Darvish. This all-star pitcher finished second in the NL Cy Young in 2020 and has plenty more left in the tank. Astonishingly, San Diego was also able to obtain starting pitcher Joe Musgrove from Pittsburgh. The bullpen is looking good as the front office looks to find the perfect closer for this club. They may have just found it in Mark Melancon. After a great improvement in 2020, expectations are rising for this Padres team. It will be an exciting season of baseball in San Diego in 2021.
