CLIMATE PLEDGE ARENA
The home of the NHL’s Seattle Kraken is Climate Pledge Arena. Originally opened in 1962, this venue has a rich history, hosting many important events over the years. Among the biggest events to come through this building were the 1974 NBA All Star Game, 1978 and 1979 NBA Finals, and the 1990 Good Will Games. The WNBA’s Seattle Storm played here from 2000 to 2018 and plan to return in 2022. Home to many concerts, Climate Pledge Arena even hosted The Beatles twice; once in 1964 at the height of Beatlemania and again in 1966 (their final performance in an indoor venue). However, this building is best remembered as the home of the former NBA team, Seattle Supersonics. It served as their home from 1967 to 1978 and again from 1985 until the team’s move to Oklahoma City in 2008.
An older arena such as this is bound to have gone through renovations over the years and Climate Pledge Arena is no exception. Upgraded several times over the years, it underwent a $1 billion-plus renovation after news of the NHL coming to Seattle. You name it and it has been upgraded. From the bowl seating to the concourse, suites, scoreboard, locker rooms, and everything else, this venue is ready to host NHL hockey. Amazon purchased the naming rights to bring more awareness to climate change.

The Kraken has been released! The NHL announced their approval of a Seattle expansion team in 2018 and just three short years later the Seattle Kraken were ready to take the ice. The NHL’s newest team plays in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference and is out to prove that they belong with the other teams.
Named for the Giant Pacific Octopus known to roam the waters of the Puget Sound, the Kraken represents a fierce and indomitable creature that cannot be conquered. The primary logo incorporates an homage to the Seattle Metropolitans, a team from that won the Stanley Cup more than a century ago, while the design of the secondary anchor logo is a nod to the coastal region along with the Seattle Space Needle.
Hall of Fame player and former Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis has moved out west to take over as the GM for the Kraken. His keen hockey eye will, undoubtedly, be critical in establishing a consistent atmosphere of winning in the early years. He began the process by selecting former Philadelphia Flyers coach Dave Hakstol to lead this group. Hakstol has learned a lot from his first stint as a head coach and plans to implement that knowledge in pursuit of a Seattle Stanley Cup.
Center Luke Henman became the first player in Seattle Kraken history after signing with the team in May of 2021. He gained a bunch of teammates in July at the NHL Expansion Draft. Francis was methodical with his picks, slowly cultivating a group he feels can come together and create something magical on the ice. His plan was to avoid the stars that would come with a large price tag and focus on value from younger players that are ready to break out.
It was made clear that a strong defense will be the foundation of this team. Even before the draft began, Francis signed Adam Larsson from Edmonton and Jamie Oleksiak from Dallas. The Kraken would select veteran Mark Giordano (the former Calgary Flames captain) and Jeremy Lauzon along with Carson Soucy (Minnesota) and Vince Dunn (St. Louis). These talented defensemen will work to keep things manageable in front of Phillip Grubauer. Snatching this elite netminder up in free agency, Seattle feels that they have their starter locked in. Florida’s Chris Dreiger was brought on board to back him up.
Offensively, the Kraken have some fire power. Selecting Yanni Gourde (Tampa) and Jordan Eberle (NY Islanders) with Jared McCann (Anaheim) at center, Seattle has an impressive first line. Joonas Donskoi and Calle Jarnkrok have shown flashes of brilliance and have great potential while Colin Blackwell has a tremendous work ethic and will quickly become a fan favorite. Brandon Tanev from Pittsburgh will also play an important role.
