Never achieving much success in their original city of Montreal, this franchise made the move to the United States capital in 2005, where they would become known as the Washington Nationals and quickly garner quite a following. Overwhelming support in this transplant city has helped boost the team into a major contender in the NL East, facing off against such rival teams as the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies.
Manager Dave Martinez has led his group through the twists and turns of the MLB season to win their first World Series title. Getting their first taste of the Fall Classic in 2019, the Nationals made history by earning their first World Series title. They aimed to repeat in 2020, but fell short of the mark with a record of 26-34. The pandemic-shortened season had Washington in 4th place the NL East and they missed the playoffs.
Ready to work past this drop in production and get back to work in 2021, the Washington Nationals should never be underestimated. While there is certainly a lot of turnover for this group, Washington’s roster has the capability to accomplish any task with talent coming in the form of Alex Avila, Luis Garcia, Alcides Escobar, and Carter Kieboom playing the infield. Yadiel Hernandez, Victor Robles, Juan Soto are a solid outfield combo. Veteran DH Ryan Zimmerman is a fan favorite as he is always solid in the batter’s box. Adding Josh Bell to the infield via a trade with Pittsburgh was an immediate upgrade for this squad.
The tandem of Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg as starting pitchers on the mound had every team digging in their cleats and anticipating the fire power. However, the Nats traded Schwarber and have seen Strasburg shut down for the rest of 2021 with neck surgery. The Washington Nationals are still an opponent to be feared with Patrick Corbin leading the way. Every player on their roster has the ability to capitalize on the slightest mistake to give this team the best chance to win.
Getting back to the World Series will be no easy task, but Dave Martinez has a championship mind and believes that if his clubhouse can reach their potential then success will be within reach. He is intent upon helping this team finish the regular season strong and make a push for October baseball. Washington baseball fans expect nothing less than an all-out attack on the diamond that could result in Washington turning some heads in 2021.
