Stepping onto the court each night in front of their fans in their new hometown of Brooklyn, NY, the Nets have adapted a new style and attitude to match their location. The move has not exactly been a smooth transition, however.
It all started back in 1967 with the founding of the New Jersey Americans in the ABA. Later renamed the New York Nets and then moving to the NBA, the teams seemed to finally settle on the moniker of New Jersey Nets from 1977 to 2012.
In 2012, former team owner Mikhail Prokhorov made good on his efforts to move the team to Brooklyn and the Nets, once again, packed up and moved back to New York. Moving into the Barclays Center seemed to be the change of scenery that the team needed, as they made the playoffs for the first time since 2008.
They would lose in the first round, but return to the playoffs again in the 2013-14 season under new head coach Jason Kidd. Moving directly from NBA player to NBA coach, Kidd had his finger on the pulse of the team and led them to the Eastern Conference semi-finals. His abrupt departure for the Milwaukee Bucks opened up a spot for Lionel Hollins. Under his leadership the Nets returned to the playoffs for a third straight year.
This kind of coaching inconsistency will eventually catch up with a team, however, and the Nets began to go downhill. Kenny Atkinson was hired in April of 2016 to turn the team around, but this has proved to be no easy task. He was let go midway through the 2019-2020 season. Jacques Vaughn would take over on an interim basis. He would be replaced by former player Steve Nash, a surprise hire who would take over the team in the offseason. Clearly in the middle of a rebuild, this franchise had struggled to create a culture of winning and togetherness that would bond the team and see them through the tumultuous schedule of an NBA season. Under Nash, however, this would begin to change.
Every team needs a star player to be the center of their franchise. While Brooklyn had made the decision to trade for D’Angelo Russell and make him the centerpiece of their franchise, a business opportunity arose that they could not turn down. Brooklyn’s stunning offseason sent Russell to Golden State and brought them Kevin Durant. The iconic NBA champion and MVP would come to Brooklyn on a massive deal worth $164 million over four years. While he would miss the entirety of the 2019-2020 season due to injury and play only 35 games in 2020-2021, he is intent on bringing a championship to Brooklyn.
Brooklyn would load up on talent with an impressive roster which would include Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Paul Millsap, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Blake Griffin. The Nets were hailed as the team with the next Big Three with Durant, Harden, and Irving. However, due to injuries, this group only played 16 games together. Harden and Millsap were moved to Philadelphia in a blockbuster trade deadline deal that brought Ben Simmons, Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and two future first round draft picks to Brooklyn.
The new Big Three of Durant, Irving, and Simmons could become a powerful combination that could lead the Nets back to the playoffs for a run that could end with a championship title.
A devastating second round loss to Milwaukee in a game seven that went to overtime knocked Brooklyn out of the playoffs last season. The stunning finish has echoed through the minds of every player on Brooklyn’s roster. This team is using the loss to motivate them to utilize their talents to destroy the competition. Looking forward, there is just one thing on this team’s mind: championship.
Inspiration for the current team can be found by looking to the past of this franchise. The rafters of the Barclays Center are a monument to great former basketball players for this organization. Among the retired numbers are Drazen Petrovic, John Williamson, Bill Melchionni, Buck Williams, Jason Kidd, and Julius “Dr. J.” Erving.
