Plugging away to earn their keep in the viciously competitive Metropolitan division of the Eastern Conference, the Columbus Blue Jackets are the NHL’s representative team from the great state of Ohio. Since their founding in the year 2000, Columbus has fought to carve out a place for themselves in the league and attain a status as a Stanley Cup competitor. In recent years, many would argue that this hardworking club has done just that.
The first several years of existence for this team were full of frustrations. The expansion draft had left the new team with a roster devoid of real star power so it was difficult to bring their record out from the bottom of the standings. In fact, Columbus failed to make the playoffs until 2009, where they subsequently lost four straight games to the Detroit Red Wings. Their first playoff game victory would come in 2014 during a memorable six game series versus the Pittsburgh Penguins. Matching up with the Pens again following the 2016-17 season, Columbus managed only one win the opening round against the eventual Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh team. The end of the 2017-2018 season saw Columbus make the playoffs in back to back seasons for the first time in their existence. A six game series against another eventual Stanley Cup Champion team in the Washington Capitals bounced the Blue Jackets from the postseason tournament.
The 2019-2020 season earned Columbus even more respect across the league. Earning the right to play in the NHL playoffs by eliminating Toronto in the qualifying series, the Blue Jackets took on a red hot Lightning team. After sweeping Tampa last season in the opening round of the playoffs, the Lightning had their revenge in this five game series. A valiant effort by Columbus fell short, and the Lightning would go on to win the Cup. Blue Jackets fans know that big things are on the horizon for this club. However, the 2020-2021 season brought a major regression for the club as they would linger at the bottom of the standings and were an early elimination from postseason contention. Head coach John Tortorella agreed to mutually part ways with the club at the end of the season.
The next coach for the Blue Jackets, Brad Larsen, is tasked with getting more out of this team. Assuming this team is able to get back on track in 2021-2022, things are definitely looking up for this young franchise. At the heart of this group has been their captain, Nick Foligno. His leadership has been on full display each night as he took the ice alongside his teammates and was recognized in 2015 when he was named an NHL All Star Game captain when the event was held in Columbus. Tough business decisions led Columbus to pull the trigger on a trade which would send Foligno to Toronto in exchange for a 2021 first round pick and a 2022 fourth round pick. The Blue Jackets will have to look within themselves to overcome the loss of their captain and find the next man up to wear the “C”.
Among the other talented players for Columbus is Boone Jenner, a talented forward working hard every night to bring star power to this roster. Gustav Nyquist leads the charge offensively on the stats sheet. Oliver Bjorkstrand also plays a major factor for the club. The signing of Max Domi had Columbus fans very excited for the future as this guy brings offensive firepower and tenacity to the ice each night. He has struggled in Columbus and the organization is hoping he can find his game soon. Defensively strong with players like Zach Werenski, Columbus does all they can to make the workload easier on their starting goaltender Elvis Merzlikins. A major trade with Winnipeg brought in Patrik Laine in exchange for Pierre-Luc Dubois. Laine is a great player who should fit in well with this roster.
Cam Atkinson was moved in the offseason to Philadelphia, paving the way for Columbus to get Jakub Voracek. A hard-nosed forward, Voracek will add more toughness to this group. The Blue Jackets could not afford to re-sign Seth Jones, opting instead to trade him to Chicago for draft picks.
While still a young franchise, the Columbus Blue Jackets have suited up some great players over their years in the NHL. Among the most memorable are Rick Nash, Sergei Fedorov, Brandon Dubinsky, Jack Johnson, Ryan Johansen, Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, and Sergei Bobrovsky.
