An original six franchise that makes its home in the heart of Manhattan, the New York Rangers are a force to be reckoned with in the talented Metropolitan Division of the NHL’s Eastern Conference. The Rangers have four Stanley Cup titles to their credit, including their most recent, in 1994, when they snapped a 54 year curse under the leadership of Hall of Fame captain Mark Messier.
After winning the President’s Trophy in the regular season, posting the best record in the league, the Rangers cruised through the opening round of the playoffs, sweeping the rival New York Islanders in four games. After a quick five game series against the Washington Capitals, the Rangers found themselves facing off against another rival in the Eastern Conference Finals, the New Jersey Devils.
This series, which lives on in hockey legend, was a hard fought battle between two powerhouse teams. Taking seven games to decide, it featured a memorable comeback by the Rangers. Being down three games to two and looking to force a game seven, Mark Messier’s guarantee prior to game six and then his hat trick performance is the stuff of legends. An epic game seven went to double overtime (the third double overtime game of the series) before blue collar player Stephane Matteau was able to sneak one past Martin Brodeur to send the Rangers to the finals. Echoes of “Matteau! Matteau! Matteau!” still reverberate off the walls at MSG.
The 1994 Stanley Cup Finals matched the New York Rangers against the Vancouver Canucks and their star players in Trevor Linden and Pavel Bure. The Rangers came from behind again in the series to take the lead before losing games five and six. Looking to take the series and break the curse once and for all, the Rangers took the ice at Madison Square Garden for an unforgettable way to cap off the year in an epic game seven. Goals from Brian Leetch, Adam Graves, and Mark Messier were enough to edge the Canucks 3-2 and bring home the Cup. Rangers fans still remember holding their breath as the final faceoff took place to the right of Mike Richter with 1.6 seconds left on the clock and then going crazy after Craig McTavish won the draw and the final buzzer sounded.
Memories of the ’94 Rangers are still represented at the Garden. It is not at all uncommon for fans to show up to the games, even today, wearing Messier’s #11 jersey. Playoff runs from 2012 to 2017 had Rangers fans on the edge of their seats, seeming poised to win a championship each year. However, it just wasn’t in the cards for the Rangers. A trip to the finals at the end of the 2013-2014 season was met with a heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
The New York Rangers continued into the next phase of their rebuilding process during the 2020-2021 season. Head Coach David Quinn was committed to the task of making this team younger, faster, and stronger. Coming from Boston University, Quinn has extensive experience at mentoring young players and fostering their development – skills that come in handy with the largely inexperienced Rangers.
There are plenty bright spots for this club, including Artemi Panarin. The “bread man” played a major factor for the blueshirts in his first season and looks to be the face of the franchise going forward. At the 2019 NHL Draft, the Rangers ended up with the second overall pick and selected Kappo Kakko, a Finnish winger who struggled at times in his first season but has begun to show real flashes of brilliance in year two that has fans excited for the future. The Rangers held two first round draft picks in 2020 and used them to select Alexis Lafreniere (1st overall) and Braden Schneider (19th overall). Lafreniere started to come on strong down the stretch and could become a major star under the bright lights of New York.
The captain vacancy could be filled with a multitude of players as there is leadership to spare on this team. However, the frontrunner looks to be Chris Kreider. There are also a number of great players left on this roster including Mika Zibanejad, a great young player who leads this team through rough times and has the ability to take over a game. Jacob Trouba is strong on the blue line. Igor Shesterkin has cemented his role as the number one goalie moving forward, with Alexander Georgiev strong in net as his backup.
In a pandemic-shortened season, the Rangers were inconsistent. Although they missed the playoffs, the team did exceed expectations set for them going into the season. Nevertheless, ownership made a strong statement that it wasn’t enough by firing both head coach David Quinn and general manager John Davidson. The fan base is divided over this extreme move.
