Scotiabank Arena
The Toronto Maple Leafs make their home at the Scotiabank Arena located on Bay Street in Downtown Toronto. This multi-purpose arena opened its doors to the public in 1999 and also serves the NBA’s Toronto Raptors in addition to the Toronto Rock Lacrosse team and Toronto Marlies AHL team.
Taking over for the historic Maple Leaf Gardens, the Scotiabank Arena sought to improve the experience of a sporting event through innovative technology and modern engineering. These advancements continue with improvements including a $15 million dollar renovation in 2015 which included a tremendous new scoreboard. Maple Leaf Square, a major hub including restaurants, retail shops, condominiums, and a hotel is connected to the Scotiabank Arena.

In Canada’s province of Ontario, hockey is a way of life. At the center of this lifestyle is the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Boasting a whopping 13 Stanley Cup Championships (second only to Montreal) the Leafs are an original six team with a tremendous following. Their last Cup, however, was won in 1967 and the long drought has the franchise desperate to bring another title to a new generation of fans.
Taking over the Maple Leafs moniker in 1927 (named by the famous Conn Smythe), Toronto already had won two Cups and saw its legacy improve with a third in 1932. The 1940s, though, were the true heyday for the Leafs. They would win five titles in that decade before tacking on another at the conclusion of the 1951 season. The 1960s proved to be nearly as prosperous for the club as the 1940s had been with four championship victories. However, when the Leafs hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1967, no one realized how long it would be before they would claim the title again. In fact, Toronto has waited more than 50 years and counting.
The team’s legendary play in the early years was headlined by amazing talent in players like Syl Apps, Ted Kennedy, Max Bentley, and Turk Broda. However, major contributions came from blue collar players in Don Metz, Frank McCool, and Babe Pratt. Defenseman Bill Barilko scored a goal in overtime of game five of the 1951 Stanley Cup Finals, clinching the championship for Toronto. He would disappear in a plane crash in the offseason and the Leafs would not win a Cup again until 1962, the same year that the wreckage was finally recovered.
The 1960s dynasty centered around players such as Johnny Bower, Frank Mahovlich, George Armstrong, Bob Nevin, and Dave Keon. Their championship runs were dominant and kept Toronto at the top of the list of premier teams in the NHL. A number of factors, including the 1967 expansion draft had an impact on the Maple Leafs roster and led to them missing the playoffs in 1968 and 1970.
For most of the last 50 years, the Toronto Maple Leafs qualified for the playoffs, but bowed out by the second round. They made the Conference Finals only five times and failed to advance beyond it in each instance. Despite having some talented players on the team over the years like Darryl Sittler, Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, Felix Potvin, and Mats Sundin, Toronto was never able to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together to culminate in a Stanley Cup title. Recent history has been especially harsh, with the Leafs only making the playoffs five times since 2004 and being eliminated in the first round each time. The Leafs were bounced from the 2018 and 2019 playoffs by Boston, each in a seven game series. 2020 saw Toronto excluded from the tournament after a five game qualifying series with Columbus. They acquired veteran center Joe Thornton to bolster their locker room leadership in 2021. Thornton was hungry to win his first Stanley Cup.
NHL Hall of Famer Brendan Shanahan took over as President of the team in 2014 and brought former Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock in to be the bench boss. He would bring his team to the playoffs three consecutive seasons after his first year in Toronto, but was let go after a disappointing start to the 2019-2020 season. The organization promoted Sheldon Keefe to the head coaching role at the NHL level from his previous spot with the minor league team. He got off to a red hot start and hopes that the trend continues.
Adding to the excitement is the play of Auston Matthews, the 2016 number one overall draft choice. Now with four years under his belt, Matthews is a bonafide star in this league and works alongside captain John Tavares. Young phenoms Mitch Marner and William Nylander are brilliant for this club. Toronto is all in on a Stanley Cup run and are a deadly team on offense.
The defense, led by Morgan Reilly and Jake Muzzin, play a tough game in front of goalie Peter Mrazek. His skills and solid consistency keep every game close for this young group. Adding TJ Brodie to the defensive group only tighten things up on the blue line for the Leafs.
Toronto looked great during the 2020-2021 season, going 35-14-7. While they fell one game short of their win total the year before, they also played 14 less games. The record was enough to secure the first place spot in the North division and head back to playoff hockey.
Matching up against the rival Montreal Canadiens, the Leafs lost a close one in the opening frame by a score of 2-1. Responding with force, the Maple Leafs won three straight and had Montreal on the ropes. However, anything can happen in playoff hockey as the underdog Canadiens came back from down 3-1 in the series to force a game seven. Going the distance, this series ended as all do, with handshakes between opponents with the utmost respect for each other. For the Maple Leafs fans, though, they would shake hands with heavy hearts. Eliminated again in the first round after a 3-1 Canadiens win, something feels different about this one. Perhaps it was how great they played throughout the regular season, or the fact that they were one game away for three straight games and couldn’t get the job done. Either way, something is missing from this team and management will, no doubt, search for it in the offseason.
Hopes among the Toronto faithful are that this team can finally get over the jump and capture the Stanley Cup which has eluded them since 1967. Continuing to grow and work out the kinks in their game, Toronto is poised to be a devastatingly tough opponent for years to come. This young team looks to emulate the great play of past stars including Mats Sundin, Tim Horton, Dave Keon, Darryl Sittler, Johnny Bower, Syl Appls, Wendel Clark, Frank Mahovlich, Borje Salming, and Curtis Joseph.
