The newest Florida-based football franchise added to the National Football League is the Jacksonville Jaguars. Joining the ranks of the NFL in 1995, the Jags quickly found their footing amongst stiff competition in the AFC.
Starting off in 1995 with a record of 4-12, the team earned their first winning record the next season and kept improving each year until 1999 where they posted a record of 14-2. Along the way, Jacksonville managed to win their division twice (1998 & 1999), make the playoffs four times, and advance to the AFC title game twice. All of this success came under the regime of no-nonsense coach Tom Coughlin. Following a period of regression after the 1999 season, Coughlin was eventually replaced by Jack Del Rio who coached the team through 2011.
Taking over the team as head coach in 2017 was Doug Marrone. A former player and longtime coach around the NFL and NCAA, Marrone was determined to turn this franchise around and made huge impact in his first full season. Jacksonville leapfrogged to a first place finish in the AFC South and advanced all the way to the AFC Championship game before being eliminated by the Patriots in a hard-fought game. However, going 5-11 in 2018 and 6-10 in 2019 had left his job hanging in the balance in Jacksonville. After a disastrous 1-15 outing in 2020, the Jaguars, who had already fired General Manager Dave Caldwell, would be looking for a new head coach as well.
They’d find it in Urban Meyer. A college coach with a resume filled with accomplishment, the Jaguars are hoping Meyer can bring this success to the pro level. Holding the number one overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, it seemed to be that Jacksonville was locked in on Trevor Lawrence, the phenom QB from Clemson. It came as no surprise when his name was called. Lawrence and Meyer will be the faces of the franchise for years to come. In light of the new quarterback coming to town, expect major changes to the depth chart, especially with the addition of Clemson running back Travis Etienne who was taken by Jacksonville with the 25th overall pick.
The passing game features receivers in DJ Chark, Keelan Cole, and Laviska Shenault Jr. These guys are all reliable and could see a big boost in their numbers in 2021. So, too, could veteran tight end Tyler Eifert. Adding another solid veteran receiver in Marvin Jones really makes this a great group.
Undrafted rookie running back James Robinson became an early standout in 2020 and has made himself into a top offensive weapon for this group. It will be interesting to see how his career develops after going over 1,000 yards in his rookie year.
The defense for the Jaguars, thought of as questionable just a few years ago, had become a strong point for the team. Coach Meyer is hoping that their freefall in 2020 can be corrected. Filling the roster with players like Josh Allen (rookie 7th overall draft pick in 2019), Tre Herndon, and Jarrod Wilson, Jacksonville is solid on this side of the ball. Leon Jacobs and Myles Jack are also both big contributors. Jacksonville decided to bolster their defense by selecting cornerback CJ Henderson out of Florida with the ninth overall pick and defensive end K’Lavon Chaisson out of LSU with the 20th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Bringing cornerback Shaquill Griffin on board in free agency makes this group even better.
Though still a young franchise, the Jaguars have had a number of great players on their teams over the years. Some of the most loved players in Jaguars history include Fred Taylor, Maurice Jones-Drew, Jimmy Smith, Tony Boselli, Mark Brunell, and David Garrard.
