State Farm Arena
Formerly known as Philips Arena, the Atlanta Hawks play their home games at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA. A multi-purpose indoor arena that also was once the home of the Atlanta Thrashers, today the Hawks are the sole tenants.
Featuring a layout for over 16,000 seats, there is plenty of room for all Hawks fans. The luxury suites and party suites offer amazing opportunities for corporate group outings and private parties looking to attend the best the NBA has to offer. In addition to Hawks basketball, this venue has hosted the 2003 NBA All Star Game, Arena Football, NCAA basketball, the 2008 NHL All Star Game, along with UFC, Wrestlemania, and plenty of concerts.
Shortly after purchasing the Hawks, Tony Ressler embarked on a major renovation to improve sightlines around the arena bowl. In addition, new premium seating areas were constructed to go along with a new videoboard (which is about three times the size of the old one), and upgraded dining options.

Originally starting off as the Buffalo Bison of the NBL, this franchise made several stops along the way to their current home in Atlanta. Stints in Illinois, Milwaukee (where they switched to the Hawks moniker), and St. Louis all preceded their final relocation to Georgia. It was in St. Louis where the Hawks won the NBA Finals back in 1958. Thirsty for another championship banner, this group competes out of the Southeast division of the Eastern Conference.
While the team lasted only one month in Buffalo, their time in Illinois was important. It was here, in 1949, where they became one of the NBA’s original teams as they had merged with the NBL and BAA. Two years later, the group was on the move again, this time to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
By 1954, the Hawks had on their roster a young phenom in Bob Pettit. He would lead the team in their move to St. Louis, where they would win their sole championship in 1958 against the rival Boston Celtics. Pettit shined in the spotlight with a 50 point performance in the final game. A strong contender throughout the 1960s, the Hawks were never able to reach champion status again.
A new ownership group moved the team to Atlanta in 1968 and they have remained there ever since. They would soon revamp their whole brand with new logos and colors, opting for white, gold, and red to mirror their NHL counterpart at the time, the Atlanta Flames. While the Flames eventually left for Calgary, the Hawks continued to succeed in the south with players like Pete Maravich and Lou Hudson. Ted Turner purchased the team in 1977, solidifying their place in the city.
Dominique Wilkins joined the team in 1982 and became the face of the franchise for the next dozen years. Becoming an elite team in 80s, Atlanta was always in contention at playoff time with star players like Moses Malone and Spud Webb. The 90s ushered in names like Mookie Blaylock and Stacey Augmon. Dikembe Mutombo dominated in the late 90s for Atlanta. Jason Terry was added in 1999 and immediately made an impact. Unfortunately, management could not build a solid squad around him and the team began to perform poorly. While several tough seasons would follow, the Hawks would begin to turn things around by 2007, making the playoffs for the first time in nearly a decade.
Al Horford, Mike Bibby, and the rest of the team started putting together winning seasons, leading to 10 straight postseason berths. Aided by Tracy McGrady, Jerry Stackhouse, Jason Collins and more, this group restored Atlanta back to prominence.
Currently led by head coach Lloyd Pierce, the Hawks are in the midst of a rebuilding phase. Missing the playoffs in 2018, 2019, and 2020, this group is reloading for the future. John Collins and Trae Young are seeing more playing time as they give their all for this team nightly. A midseason trade would net the Hawks Clint Capela. He is a big upgrade for this group. Further, re-acquiring DeWayne Dedmon from Sacramento brings him back to Atlanta, where he had his best season. The disappointing final regular season record of 20-47 has this group looking to the future and perhaps a playoff push once they work out all the kinks.
Signing forward Danilo Gallinari to a three year deal could reshape this team out on the floor and help put more checks in the win column for Atlanta in the 2020-2021 season. A four year, $72 million contract with Bogdan Bogdanovic was another stunning move for the club. Veteran Rajon Rondo signed on for two years, but was sent to the Clippers at the trade deadline to bring in Lou Williams and two future second round draft picks.
Legends of the past for the Atlanta Hawks include Dominique Wilkins, Bob Pettit, Pete Maravich, Dikembe Mutombo, Moses Malone, Joe Johnson, and Spud Webb. Click here for additional information about the Atlanta Hawks.
