Known as the Monsters of the Midway, the Chicago Bears have made their home in the Windy City since 1922. Eight league championships before the merger and one Super Bowl victory (the famous 1985 Bears) have brought nine titles to Chicago. Over 25 playoff appearances show that this team is always in the hunt for their next Lombardi Trophy.
George Halas took ownership of the Chicago football franchise and renamed them as the Bears in 1922. Developing a culture of winning, the Bears became a powerhouse, racking up six championships between 1932 and 1946.
Their lone Super Bowl title came in 1985 with “Iron” Mike Ditka at the helm of an unbelievably talented team. A merciless defense allowed the Bears to cruise through their schedule, culminating in a 46-10 Super Bowl win over the New England Patriots. This legendary team featured several Hall of Fame players and some of the most recognizable personalities in the game. Among them were Jim McMahon, Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, William “The Refrigerator” Perry, and “Sweetness” Walter Payton. Though Bears fans felt destined to repeat, it has now been more than 30 years since they have been able to hoist the trophy.
Playing out of the historic NFC North Division makes for a hard road to the playoffs right out of the gate with intense rivalries against the Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Detroit Lions.
After trading up to the number two spot in the 2017 draft to take QB Mitch Trubisky, the Bears sent the message that they were moving on to a new era in Chicago. As was expected, the rough start for Trubisky translated to a 5-10 finish for the Bears, but with a healthy dose of optimism for the future. That optimism took shape in 2018 before a regression in 2019. When the 2020 season saw the Bears bench Trubisky at one point in favor of backup Nick Foles, the writing was on the wall that Trubisky would not be here to stay. Chicago would sign Andy Dalton in the offseason to be the new starting QB as Trubisky left the team in free agency. In another twist for this position, the Bears selected quarterback Justin Fields from Ohio State with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Who will start for Chicago in 2021?
2019 third round draft pick David Montgomery has taken over as the feature back and went over 1,000 yards in 2020. Dalton has a great cast of receivers around him featuring Allen Robinson (who notched an incredible 1,250 receiving yards in 2020) and Anthony Miller. Rookie Darnell Mooney made a name for himself as well. Added to that group was Cordarrelle Patterson. He is a true wildcard on the field. Tight end Jimmy Graham gives the offense a big boost after signing with Chicago in the offseason.
The famous Bears defense is looking to really fire on all cylinders this season. Defensive back Eddie Jackson plays deep while Danny Trevathan makes an impact in the linebacking corps. Roquan Smith has turned into a real leader and turned up big again. Khalil Mack is eager to punish the opposition from the linebacker position. Linebacker Robert Quinn came over from Dallas to bolster the depth chart.
The Bears 2020 record of 8-8 was enough to earn them a Wild Card berth. Matching up against the New Orleans Saints, Chicago showed that they are not quite ready for the postseason spotlight. A disappointing 21-9 loss has this team looking to a brighter future in 2021.
Among the many legendary Bears to suit up in a Chicago uniform are iconic players such as Bronko Nagurski, George McAfee, Willie Galimore, Gayle Sayers, Brian Piccolo, Sid Luckman, Dick Butkus, Bill Hewitt, Bill George, Clyde Turner, Red Grange, Mike Ditka, and Brian Urlacher.
