A young franchise based out of Charlotte, North Carolina, the NFL’s Carolina Panthers have emerged as a heavy contender in a tough NFC with playoff appearances to back their reputation as a punishing defense that can put on a show offensively as well. Two Super Bowl appearances, including their most recent in 2015, has left this club hungry for a chance to make it back to the big game and finally earn their parade with a Lombardi Trophy in tow.
The early Panthers teams broke away from the typical expansion franchise protocol by jumping out to a 7-9 record in 1995 before going 12-4 in their sophomore season. Under John Fox, the 2003 Panthers reached the Super Bowl, going up against the dynastic New England Patriots. The thrilling game ended with a last second field goal to seal the 32-29 heartbreaker in New England’s favor. This memorable battle is still looked at as one of the greatest Super Bowls of all time.
Teetering back and forth between mediocrity and dominance, the 2-14 record in 2010 was enough for executives in Carolina to turn the team over to a new coach and quarterback. Former player turned coach Ron Rivera was brought in to lead the team. He took on a team that had the first overall pick in that year’s draft and used it to select Auburn quarterback Cam Newton. This pivotal move would determine a great deal of the team’s future.
Building around Newton, the Panthers would improve their record in each of the next three seasons and would reach the Super Bowl in his fifth. In 2015, Panthers fans saw their team jump out to a 14-0 start before entering the playoffs with a final regular season record of 15-1. Beating Seattle in the Divisional playoffs 31-24 and crushing the Arizona Cardinals 49-15 punched Carolina’s ticket for Super Bowl 50 against Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos. A hard-fought defensive struggle saw Denver come out on top 24-10.
In the years since, there has been turnover at the highest level in Carolina. Ron Rivera is now the head coach in Washington and Cam Newton left for the New England Patriots. While fans are sad to see them leave, there is a renewed sense of optimism about the team. A fresh start may be just what this franchise needed.
Former Baylor head coach Matt Rhule was hired to take over the team for the 2020 season. Working with Teddy Bridgewater under center, the Panthers struggled to learn their new system and win games. A rough 5-11 first season included a lot of growing pains and now it is up to this squad to iron everything out in the offseason and see what they can produce in year two. They will do so with a new quarterback. Carolina elected to upgrade their offensive talent by trading three draft picks to the New York Jets in exchange for Sam Darnold. A former number three overall draft pick in 2018, Darnold is eager to prove himself on a new team. He has overcome injuries and is looking to stay healthy and execute the game plan with expert efficiency. Bridgewater, meanwhile, was traded to Denver just prior to the 2021 NFL Draft in exchange for a sixth round pick.
One thing is for sure, running back Christian McCaffrey is an MVP caliber running back who can do it all. Breaking his own record for all-purpose yards, McCaffrey had his best season yet for both rushing and receiving in 2019. He is one of three players in NFL history to have rushed for 1,000 yards and caught for 1,000 yards in the same season. An early injury sidelined him for most of 2020 but he intends to come back better than ever in 2021.
Young receiver DJ Moore hopes to make names for himself this year while veteran Robby Anderson steps in to bring a veteran presence. Moore was able to eclipse 1,000 yards in 2020 and aims to do it again in 2021.
Defensively, Carolina has gone through a major transition. Backed up by Shaq Thompson, moving the ball on the ground will be no easy task. 2019 rookie draft pick selection Brian Burns (16th overall out of Florida State) added even more to the equation. In 2020, Carolina used their seventh overall draft pick to bring in Derrick Brown, a defensive tackle out of Auburn. This group is looking strong going into the season, especially after signing Haason Reddick. Tahir Whitehead and Rasul Douglas also contribute for this group. The Panthers used their eighth overall draft pick in 2021 to select Jaycee Horn, a cornerback from South Carolina. They expect to insert him into the lineup quickly and have him put some fear into quarterbacks looking to throw deep.
While this team may not have been around for very long, they have still compiled a list of great players that have come out of the tunnel on Sundays to represent them. Among the best to ever compete for the Carolina Panthers are Steve Smith, Luke Kuechly, Cam Newton, Thomas Davis, Greg Olsen, Julius Peppers, and DeAngelo Williams.
