Following the departure of the Minnesota North Stars in 1993, the Twin Cities area desperately missed cheering for a hometown hockey team. After seven long years of trying, Minnesota’s wish was granted when the NHL selected them as the home for a new expansion team, the Minnesota Wild.
Based out of St. Paul, the Wild play in the Central Division of the NHL’s Western Conference. Despite major competition, the Wild were able to get their feet under themselves early and qualified for the playoffs in their third season, reaching the Western Conference Finals before being swept by the eventual champion Anaheim Ducks. Since then, the Wild have made nine more postseason appearances but still dream of making it back to the third round and beyond.
Boudreau’s third year in Minnesota saw the team drop to just one game above .500 and completely out of the playoff contention. Midway through the 2019-2020 season, management decided to pull the plug. Dean Evason would take over coaching duties on an interim basis. There is still a lot to work with in terms of the Wild roster, however. They were eliminated from the 2020 qualifying round of the playoffs by Vancouver in four games.
Leading the charge for the group has been Captain Mikko Koivu. Earning the “C” on his jersey back in 2009, Koivu was a first round selection back in 2001 and has been with the organization ever since. Joining the team at the NHL level in 2005, he holds several records for the team. After 15 seasons, he will not be rejoining the Wild for the 2020-2021 season. The team and their fans will miss this Minnesota legend. Also missing will be Eric Staal after his trade to Buffalo.
Defenseman Jared Spurgeon has taken over the captaincy. Notable stars for this club include Kevin Fiala and young Kirill Kaprizoc (Calder Trophy winner as NHL’s best rookie). These veterans still play at a high level and contribute greatly to the squad, as does Mats Zuccarello. Young defenseman Matt Dumba does his best to keep the crease clear for his goaltender. Cam Talbot has come in to take over starting goalie duties after Minnesota traded Devan Dubnyk to San Jose during the 2020 NHL Draft. Alex Stalock stands by as backup, ready to take the ice at a moment’s notice.
Minnesota put together a solid regular season record of 35-16-5. Securing the third place spot in the West Division, they would face the Vegas Golden Knights in the opening round of the playoffs. A pulse-pounding series, this one went the full seven games. However, when the dust settled it was Vegas who would be moving on. The Wild have shown that, despite major changes to their roster, this team has incredible depth and can press forward without an overhaul rebuild.
The fans in Minnesota cannot get enough of their hometown heroes. Still a young franchise, the Wild faithful have been fortunate enough to watch some great players over the years including Miko Koivu, Marian Gaborik, Zack Parise, Ryan Suter, and Devan Dubnyk.
