Bell Centre
The Bell Centre opened in Montreal for the 1996-97 season, taking over for the Montreal Forum, which housed the Habs for the previous 70 years. Given the amount of history in their old building, there was no room for failure in their new facility. Luckily, the Bell Centre has lived up to expectations and is one of the best venues in the league, not only in terms of atmosphere, but also due to its construction. Additional renovations, such as in 2015 when improvements were made to the hallways, concessions, and restaurants have kept this venue on the cutting edge.
The fandom in Montreal is a sight to behold. The fans have an intense love for the Canadiens and show up in tremendous numbers each night. You can feel the entire building shake after each goal. The building is decorated with memorabilia celebrating the team’s history, making the place really feel like home.

Montreal is the largest city in the Canadian province of Quebec and home to the NHL’s most accomplished franchise, the Montreal Canadiens. This historic hockey club dates back to 1909 and has amassed an unprecedented 24 Stanley Cup Championships; more than any other team in the league.
In addition to cheering on the most decorated team in the league, the fans in Montreal have had the distinct pleasure of watching some of the greatest players ever to take the ice line up for their hometown squad. Legendary players including Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, Doug Harvey, Jacques Plante, Larry Robinson, and scores more that have worn the iconic Canadiens sweater.
After winning seven Stanley Cups prior to 1955, the Habs rattled off five consecutive titles to close out the decade before picking up four more in the 1960s, and six more in the 1970s. Winning once in the 80s and once in the 90s, the Canadiens are truly NHL royalty.
The most famous Canadien in team history is Maurice “Rocket” Richard. This talented winger played his entire career in Montreal (18 seasons) amassing 966 points in 978 regular season games. He was the first in NHL history to record 50 goals in 50 games and the first to reach 500 goals. He was elected to 13 NHL All Star Games and hoisted the Cup eight times for the Canadiens. His younger brother, Henri Richard, also became a Canadiens legend, winning 11 Cups with the team, the most of any single player in NHL history.
Montreal is currently in the midst of their longest Cup drought, dating back to 1993. New Head Coach Dominique Ducharme was determined to end this streak and bring the Cup back to Montreal. He had his work cut out for him as this group had only made the playoffs once in the last four seasons. Though they had advanced to the second round of the playoffs in 2020, it was thought that this group was not strong enough to really compete.
Despite the expectations and mediocre play in the regular season, Montreal made it to the postseason. Making the playoffs by the skin of their teeth, they intended to make the best of the opportunity. After being down 3-1 in the opening round against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal came alive and stunned Toronto, claiming the series in seven games. Moving on to the second round, they would face off against the Winnipeg Jets. The Habs would sweep the Jets in four quick games.
Finding themselves in the Western Conference Finals against the Vegas Golden Knights, fans back in Canada knew that this was a big hill to climb. Carey Price and company buckled down and played lights out hockey. Vegas was tough, but the Habs found a way to breach the security that is Marc-Andre Fleury in net. It would take six games, but the Canadiens had defied all expectations to advance to the Stanley Cup for the first time in 28 years.
Montreal would face the defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in an epic series for the Cup. Tampa jumped out to an early series lead and pushed the Canadiens to the brink with a 3-0 lead. Game four in Montreal electric. The urgency of the Habs plight was in the air and a tight 2-2 game went to overtime before Josh Anderson extended the series.
However, it was in game five in Tampa that Montreal lost a heartbreaker to end their Cinderella end. This incredible game ended in a 1-0 final that made the Lightning repeat champs. Tears well up in the eyes of players and fans alike as they watch the Tampa Bay players hoist the Cup. The pain of this loss will fuel the offseason workouts and lead to a stronger and more determined Canadiens team next year. They will be intent on proving their Stanley Cup Finals appearance was no fluke and that they are a team to be feared.
Contributing for the Canadiens on the score sheet are Brendan Gallagher, Phillip Danault, Cole Caulfield and captain Shea Weber. A deep roster allows for the Habs to benefit from the play of Nick Suzuki, Jonathan Drouin, and Jeff Petry. Eric Staal, Josh Anderson, Tyler Toffoli all play vital roles as well. In net for the Habs is Carey Price. Now in his early 30s, Price is considered one of the best goaltenders in the game. He has won many awards over the years, but still has his sights set on hoisting the Stanley Cup before the Montreal faithful. He is looking ahead to the prospect of another deep playoff run with the Canadiens in 2022.
Featuring some of the greatest players in NHL history, including Maurice Richard, Jean Beliveau, Doug Harvey, Jacques Plante, Larry Robinson, Guy Lafleur, Howie Morenz, Frank Mahovlich, Ken Dryden, Henri Richard, Patrick Roy, and dozens more, the Canadiens have a rich tradition of excellent play.
