Tropicana Field
Built in the late 1980s in the hopes of attracting a professional baseball franchise to come to Tampa, Tropicana Field went through a major renovation just prior to the Rays taking up residence in this venue.
The brutal heat of Florida in the summertime was enough incentive for management to go with a design plan that included a domed roof and AstroTurf field. The end result is an experience that is quite different from most other ballparks in the MLB, but every bit as enjoyable.
The roughly 70 luxury suites in this massive venue each offer great appeal to baseball fans. Rays suites range in size, making them an ideal option regardless of the number of people in your group. The Sunshine State of Florida is home to the AL East’s Tampa Bay Rays. Approved as an MLB expansion team for the 1998 season, the Rays struggled mightily in the early years of their existence, rarely moving out of the last place spot in their division.
They were able to capture their first divisional championship in 2008, eventually earning their first AL pennant while advancing to the World Series where they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in five games. A disappointing end to a great playoff run, the team just had no gas left in the tank after an incredible American League Championship Series against the Boston Red Sox which went the full seven games. More playoff appearances would follow in 2010, 2011, 2013, and last season but the Rays have never made it back to the Fall Classic.
Advancing to the postseason will never be easy for Tampa as they play in the famous AL East alongside tough opponents such as the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. Last season’s record of 96-66 was another improvement for the club, but not enough to win the division. Earning a postseason berth via the Wild Card, Tampa dominated Oakland before running into the Houston Astros in the ALDS. Outmatched by a strong Houston teams, Tampa was looking for revenge in 2020.
Leading the NL East with an impressive 40-20 regular season record, Tampa blanked the Blue Jays in the Wild Card to advance to the ALDS. In the division series, the Rays closed out the Yankees three games to two in a hard-fought series. Matching up against the Houston Astros in the ALCS made for an epic series. It was everything it was billed to be, but when the dust settled after seven games, it was Tampa who would move on to the World Series.
Only one team stood between the Rays and their first MLB Championship; the Los Angeles Dodgers. Tampa gave it all they had but, the series ended in LA’s favor after six games. Perhaps it was fatigue from the Houston series or maybe the Dodgers were just destined to win, but this Rays team should be very proud of what they accomplished and the conditions under which they accomplished it. They are going to do everything they can to earn their place back in 2021 and finish what they started.
Mike Zunino has signed a one year deal to stay on behind the plate for Tampa. Ji-Man Choi has grown into a defensive powerhouse at first base while second baseman Brandon Lowe may be the best offensive player on the roster. Yandy Diaz is back healthy and looking to show it on the baseball diamond while Joey Wendle is always a reliable piece for this club.
Randy Arozarena, three time AL Gold Glover Kevin Kiermaier, and Manuel Margot are all seeing action as outfield starters, but this club has plenty of backups. The same cannot be said of the pitching rotation which features Ryan Yarbrough. More arms will be needed to get through the season and management is on the hunt to find additional hurlers. The club is also looks to cement their relievers and find a reliable closer. These moves will prove pivotal for how the team responds to the challenge of the 2021 season.
While the history of this team has not yet run into its third decade, there have been a number of important players to lace up their cleats for this organization. Among the most favored by the Tampa faithful are Evan Longoria, David Price, Ben Zobrist, Carl Crawford, and James Shields. Click here to learn more about the Tampa Bay Rays franchise.
