When examining the history of professional baseball, only one teams ranks higher than the St. Louis Cardinals when it comes to World Series titles. Recording 13 World Series championships to their credit, the Cardinals are one of the most successful franchises of all time. They have won the Pennant 23 times and the division title 14 times. The secret to this success is twofold. One, this team carries itself with the utmost professionalism, showing up to the ballpark every day committed to the common goal of winning games. Two, they have been fortunate enough to have some of the most talented players ever to step on the field in their lineup.
Stacked with unbelievable talent throughout the years, Cardinals alumni include Rogers Hornsby, Bob Gibson, Albert Pujols, Ozzie Smith, Willie McGee, Mark McGwire, Dizzy Dean, Lou Brock, Enos Slaughter, and the great Stan Musial. One could only imagine the sense of pride and tradition felt by members of the current team whenever they wear the Cardinal red and white.
Manager Mike Shildt had some big shoes to fill when he decided to take over as skipper in 2018. He took over a team that had missed the playoffs two years in a row following a five year playoff stretch which include a World Series victory. Shildt’s job is to restore this group back to playoff contender status. He inched closer in his first season before winning the division in 2019 and making an appearance in the NLCS. Despite being swept by the Washington Nationals, there was plenty of reason for optimism for this group and the 2019 Manager of the Year, Mike Shildt. While the 2020 season was no walk in the park, St. Louis managed to emerge with a 30-28 record for second place in the NL Central and Wild Card berth. Though they were eliminated in a three game series with San Diego, things continue to look up for the Cards.
The lineup card Shildt submits for each game is, undoubtedly, enviable. Featuring Yadier Molina behind the plate with Paul Goldschmidt, Tommy Edman, Paul DeJong, and newly acquired star third baseman Nolan Arenado in the infield along with Dylan Carlson, Harrison Bader, and Tyler O’Neill in the outfield, there is talent all over the diamond. Matt Carpenter is a solid DH. The pitching rotation featuring Kwang Hyun Kim, Adam Wainwright, Wade LeBlanc, with Alex Reyes closing out the games, has playoff hopes alive and well in St. Louis for 2021.
While St. Louis may not be as large a market as New York or Los Angeles, the pride the fans exude has catapulted this club to becoming one of the most valuable franchises in all of baseball, with attendance and television ratings among the top in the MLB.
