Our nation’s capital is home to a great sports franchise, consistently contending for Lord Stanley’s Cup, with fierce competitors willing to sacrifice for hockey immortality. 1974 was the year that the Washington Capitals first entered the NHL as an expansion team and the immediate results were less than even the most modest of expectations. The infamous season result of 8-67-5 remains a league record for lowest winning percentage.
However, a lot has changed over the years, with many star players wearing the Capitals sweater. Among the best to have suited up for Washington are Al Iafrate, Adam Oates, Sergei Gonchar, Kevin Hatcher, Scott Stevens, Olaf Kolzig, Mike Gartner, Dale Hunter, Peter Bondra, and Ron Langway.
Easily inserted into that list are a number of players in the current lineup for the Washington Capitals. A wave of confidence overtakes Capitals fans every time they think about their lineup, which is loaded with talent in the likes of Nicklas Backstrom, TJ Oshie, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and John Carlson. The trade deadline saw Washington make a big move in trading away Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, a 2021 first round draft pick as well as a 2022 second round draft pick to Detroit in exchange for star forward Anthony Mantha.
Ilya Samsonov slid into the starting netminder role after the departures of Braden Holtby and Vitek Vanecek. However, Vanecek was traded right back to Washington. Who will be the starter for 2021-2022? Zdeno Chara was a late addition at the end of the offseason, coming over from Boston. Team Captain Alex Ovechkin, considered to be one of the world’s best hockey players, keeps his squad in every game with a mix of speed and finesse, paired with the ability to be physical and play with grit. He will go down in history as one of the league’s all-time greats.
The history of the Washington Capitals showed a team that had only one conference championship to its credit with a resulting Stanley Cup appearance in 1998 where they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings. However, this would change in 2018, with the Capitals climbing their way to the top of the Eastern Conference in a hard fought playoffs that resulted in a Stanley Cup Finals battle against a Cinderella story team in the Vegas Golden Knights.
The 2017-18 season saw the Capitals surge to a record of 49-26-7 for 105 points. That success would mean nothing if the subsequent playoff appearance didn’t end in a decisive victory. Cruising through the first round, Washington sent Columbus home in six games. The second round matchup against Pittsburgh seemed inevitable. In the Ovechkin era, Washington had never been able to beat the Penguins and had never advanced beyond the second round.
In an epic six game series, the Capitals were finally able to clear out the demons of their past and chart a new course for their franchise as Ovechkin won the battle against Sidney Crosby, and the Capitals pressed on to the Eastern Conference Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. While Tampa had been a perennial contender for the Cup, Washington took them out of the running with a come-from-behind series victory in seven games.
An epic showdown with the expansion Vegas Golden Knights set the stage for Washington to earn their first Stanley Cup victory. The phenomenal series, lasting five games, ended with Lars Eller putting one past Marc-Andre Fleury to lift the Caps to a 4-3 victory. Ovechkin and company lifted the Cup proudly in front of the crowd in Las Vegas which featured a good amount of Washington fans in attendance.
Todd Reirden was promoted to head coach following the departure of Barry Trotz and kept the team a strong contender. In 2018-2019, the Capitals finished just one point behind their regular season record from the year before. The playoffs, however, are always a different beast and the Capitals were shown the door in the first round in a stunner of a seven game series against the Carolina Hurricanes.
While the Covid-19 pandemic through things into chaos in 2020, most teams were able to bounce back in the playoff bubble the NHL created. Despite going 41-20-8 in the regular season to lock up first place in the Metropolitan Division, the Caps were bounced by the New York Islanders in a five game first round series. The tenacity just wasn’t there for Washington and they will spent the offseason trying to figure out where things went wrong.
Under new head coach Peter Laviolette, Caps fans expected to see their team improve. Going 36-15-5 in the 2020-2021 season, it seemed that Washington had gotten back into their groove. A first round playoff series against the Boston Bruins brought an opportunity to shine. Unfortunately, things just didn’t go in their favor again, with Boston moving on after five games.
The Capitals are a great team and will come back next season even better. A lot of effort will be spent trying to solve the issues that have kept them from deeper runs in recent years and they’ll work towards exacting their revenge in the 2021-2022 season. Dominating the competition, expect for the Capitals to make another big time playoff push in 2021. For further reading about the Washington Capitals click here.
