CANADA LIFE CENTRE
The construction of the Canada Life Centre Place arena, lasting from 2003 to 2004, helped to bring about a stronger momentum for the NHL to bring a team back to Winnipeg. It took nearly seven long years, but finally the Atlanta Thrashers organization agreed to a sale of their franchise and a relocation to Winnipeg, paving the way for the Canada Life Centre to become their new home.
Minor renovations were undertaken to bring the facility up to speed as an NHL arena. Upon completion, this venue has become one of the most popular in the league. Winnipeg residents live and breathe hockey. The Jets are the main attraction in town and the venue is sold out for virtually every game of the season.

In Manitoba, Canada hockey is king. The city of Winnipeg and its residents were fortunate enough to have an NHL team in their hometown from 1972 to 1996. While never being able to command notable success (the team advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs just once, only be swept) there was definitely a deep love from the fan base. However, not even the inspiring performance of Teemu Selanne and his 76 goal rookie season was enough to keep the team in Winnipeg. Financial woes forced the team to relocate to Phoenix and the citizens of Winnipeg lost their beloved team.
Almost immediately, there was a push for the NHL to bring a team back to Winnipeg. After years of effort, the fans got their wish when the struggling Atlanta Thrashers sold to a Winnipeg-based group and moved back north for the 2011-2012 season. And while the team had been struggling on the ice with only one playoff appearance in their first few seasons (a sweep by the Anaheim Ducks), Winnipeg has established themselves as a potent threat on both ends of the ice on their way to the Western Conference Finals in 2017-2018. Needless to say, this city is thrilled to have a team back at home.
After a quick first round exit at the hands of the eventual Stanley Cup Champions St. Louis Blues last season, Winnipeg was intent on making a statement in the 2019-2020 season. While the chaos of the pandemic disrupted the season, the Jets still finished with a respectable 37-28-6 record. They made it to the Stanley Cup qualifiers, but were knocked out by Calgary in four games. Unsatisfied with this outcome, Winnipeg would be a force to be reckoned with during the 2020-2021 season. A record of 30-23-3 was enough to put them back into the playoffs. An opening round sweep of the Edmonton Oilers had fans elated as the Jets moved on to round two. However, the red hot Montreal Canadiens scorched the Jets with a sweep of their own. The four game series ended the season for Winnipeg.
There is definitely significant talent to draw from on this roster, starting with team captain Blake Wheeler. The big veteran winger puts forth a solid effort each night for Winnipeg and leads by example. Mark Scheifele is a veteran center whose game is as reliable as they come. Kyle Connor puts up solid seasons for the club. Nikolaj Ehlers is right next to them on the stats sheet. Adding Paul Stastny back to the club will prove fruitful for this powerful offsense. Trading Patrick Laine for Pierre-Luc Dubois from Columbus is a move that may prove to be beneficial for both clubs.
The young defense is anchored by Dylan DeMelo. He is a stabilizing force for the squad and has inked a new four year deal to stay in Winnipeg. Josh Morrissey definitely benefits from his example. Bringing in Nathan Beaulieu only sweetens the pot for this group. At goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck is the clear starter for Winnipeg. Jets fans are excited to watch their young goalie continue to flourish in net and work to lead them to a championship season.
There is a lot more work to be done if the Jets expect to become Stanley Cup champions, but this squad is up the task. There will be no backing down in Winnipeg this season, and with the crowd on their side, this team has the potential to break through to the final round and bring the Cup back to Canada.
This city has been the home of a great number of star players, including Dale Hawerchuk, Bobby Hull, Phil Housley, Andrew Ladd, Ilya Kovalchuk (during the Atlanta Thrashers years), Teemu Selanne, Blake Wheeler, and Dustin Byfuglien. Click here to learn more about this great hockey franchise.
